Oldest remaining restaurant

by carla griffin » Tue Dec 02, 2008 2:54 pm

Now that Mazzoni's is gone, what is Louisville's oldest remaining restaurant? And what would be the oldest remaining restaurant in the same or original place?.

Cunninghams has got to be in there someplace as does Cottage Cafe. Claudia Sanders, Checks. If you include bars maybe Dutches (for sure!), Air Devil's Inn.
Others?

Well, if you have Cunninghams in there, what about KT's......they were around in my Dad's day, then came back in the 90's......

Oriental House was Louisville's original Chinese.

Pat's/Mim's Steakhouse????

Oak Room at the Seebach........English Grill at the Brown
If life's a Banquet, what's with all the Tofu?

Cheers!

The Delta has to be up there. Jack Fry's too, in its original incarnation.

I saw an article recently that said Cunninghams is the oldest restaurant. Since 1870 or there abouts.

Correctamundo. I did some research to help The Voice-Tribune with just such an article. Cunningham's is oldest, Mazzoni's was next. Then Cottage Inn, then Kaelin's.

Mike Linnig's has an iffy position - it beats out Cottage inn if you count the original Linnig's roadside fruit stand, but they didn't really have a full restaurant until after WWII.

Hmmmmmm... I'm not positive but I think the original Chinese restaurant in Louisville was the Green Dragon on Bardstown Rd in the Highlands and then maybe Hoe Kow at the airport. I guess The Oriental House would be the oldest one remaining however.

I think you're right, Carla ... I can't speak to Green Dragon, which is a new one to me, but if I recall correctly, in a Scene cover story I wrote back in the '80s, the owners of Hoe Kow claimed to be the first - late '40s, I believe.

Don't forget China Inn on DIxie just out from the Watterson, which was owned by the same family (Chin) that opened Oriental House. I believe China Inn came first.

Spoke to the new owners of OH recently. He says they date back to late 40's. The same family started the former House of Chin. The current owners are the third or fourth family to own the place.

Cottage Inn is on Eastern Parkway on your way to the U of L campus, on the left. It's a smallish cottage looking house sits on the corner. (Sorry, don't know the cross street). It used to be all home cooking with all kinds of home made pies. It was sold not too long ago (there's a thread on this site somewhere about it) but my understanding is the food is even better now than it was before. Coupon for them in LEO.

Cottage Inn is at Eastern Parkway and Bradley, Carla, about two blocks west of Preston and Shelby and a few blocks east of I-65.

Here's my review under the new owners, from last May:

The H Kow was at Bowman Field, then moved to Evergreen and Shelbyville Road where the notorious Sahara East was located. I grew up down the street from Bowman Field.)
The original nightclub location was in the island on Bardstown Road near Hikes Lane/Buechel. Sahara and Sahara East. (I am not quite that old that I ever went in there.)
What about John E's and Pat's Steak House? Hasn't food been served there in some form for quite awhile - back to stage coach days? :-)
Has the location where the Coach Lamp is located been a bar or restaurant for a long time-maybe not continuously? Certainly not the same owners. I bet there are alot of neighborhood bars that have been in the same locations.
Fun subject.
Maybe next time, what we remember in our neighborhood or beyond. We ate out alot growing up.

What about Wagner's Pharmacy?? I am not sure if you include this as a restaurant, but I think it does a steady breakfast/lunch. When you walk in, it just smells like history.......or something like that
