Your last 15 hours to eat in Metro Louisville

by Ed Vermillion » Sun Nov 30, 2008 12:41 pm

You are leaving Metro Louisville for a very, very long time. You have been given 15 hours to eat before you leave. You are alone. Where do you go and what do you order?

Whew - one of those dessert island questions.....

First stop - Seviche. Chino Latino tuna, and then I beg Anthony to make me the special foie gras appetzer

Next stop - homemade potato chips with blue cheese at Varanese

Loosen a belt buckle....then

Tony Boombozz for the Piera on a wheat crust

Fuji Sushi to say goodbye to Ryan the sushi chef, and have his In & Out roll....

Then Gelato Gilberto for Hazelnut or Sweet Cream.

If given more time, I could probably come up with about 3 or 4 other stops, but most of these are places and/or dishes I associate with my time here in the 'Ville, so I'd want to soak up the people, atmosphere and memories, as well as the food.

0800 Breakfast: North End Cafe (Migas, fresh-squeezed OJ and black coffee)

1300 Lunch: Stevens & Stevens (Speilberg, potato salad and a Dr. Brown's Cream Soda)

1900 Dinner: Pat's Steak House (18yo McCallan's on the rocks, Oyster Cocktail, 18oz. Filet Mignon, and a baked potato oozing butter and sour cream)

(Might have to reconsider leaving Louisville)....

I would skip breakfast- I have a lot of eating coming up.(Not to mention driving)

Mojito's for lunch- I would beg them to make the Duck Flatbread off the dinner menu (it's worked in the past)

Apps at Maido- The Lotus Unfolding Roll
and Red Pepper- Unique Smell Chicken

Entree at Seviche- Moqueca, hands down my favorite dish I've had in a long time.

Dessrt at Lou Lou- Coconut Cake
and Gilberto Gilato- Chocolat Orange Gelato with a side of Fruiti di Bosco Sorbetto.

Walgreens- Tums.

Skip breakfast......too many other options

1. I would also lunch at Mojitos....Mussels and extra bread. Bring me some of those goat cheese stuffed figs wrapped in bacon too.

2. Snack: Asada Gordita from Los Gorditas and a "real" coke

3. Appetizer at Seviche.....Chef's whim ahi whatever

4. Appetizer #2 Sweet Breads at Corbett's....double portion please.

5. Dinner at Les Relais....Veal Chop medium.....cheese board after dinner. Bottle of good Bordeaux with dinner and a vintage port to finish.

6. No room for sweets.....grab a carnitas taco and a "real" coke for the road on my way out of town via Bardstown Rd......

That's excruciatingly tough, Ed.

I think probably, as much as I love Vietnam Kitchen, Melillo's, La Rosita, Shiraz and a lot of other ethnic spots, not to mention Volare, Le Relais, Porcini and some of our finest white-tablecloth eateries, I would reluctantly take off my list any place whose rough equivalent could be found in other cities.

That would bring us down to a much shorter list of places so unique or creative that it would not be as easy to find the exact equivalent in other cities: Seviche makes my list for sure. 610 Magnolia would likely follow. And then I'd most likely make tummy room for Corbett's and Varanese. These are the places that I would truly miss, because I wouldn't be as likely to see their like again.

No breakfast for me.

At Noon I would go to Tuscany and get their chicken parmesian.

3 pm I would go to Heine Brothers and get cake.

9 pm I would go to Ramsi's and get the Pollo Nuevo Havana. Then I would go to the Homeade Ice cream and Pie Kitchen for dessert.

I lived out of town for almost four years, and when I'd come home for holidays or vacation I'd have to get an Impellizzeri's pizza and a good fried fish sandwich. There was no pizza like that where I lived, and all fried fish was prepared Long John Silver's-style.

So if I was moving back to Henderson, Nevada in fifteen hours, I'd have my Impellizzeri's with homemade sausage, homemade meatballs, and green olives. I'd get my fish sandwich from Stan's. Later in the evening, I'd go to Jack's and order whatever caught my eye.

They wouldn't make my list now, but for years every time I came back to L'ville to see my brother I would go to the Bristol for the Artichoke Fritters.

Interesting question. No matter what, there is a lot of places left out.

Twig and Leaf .. not they are the best breakfast, but have been going there since before they were named The Twig (Tauls)

Lee's Korean

Volare, dinner and desert. Can't pass up Josh's desserts.

dessert .. Cafe Metro/Uptown (for a second dessert)

... Gary's idea of Tums is probably good. Bound to need it after all that food.

breakfast at Lynn's
beers at BBC Taproom and NABC & Nachbar
burgers at Monkey Wrench
pizza at Charlestown Pizza Company
coffee at Jackson's Organic on the way out of town
can I even drive after all that?

Let's see my list would have to include Santa Fe, Za's, El Mundo's, the BBC, Maido's, Ramsi's, Goose Creek Diner, and the Granville. Now to create some idea of a schedule.

Early Lunch at Santa Fe - as it will be a busy day, I'll limit myself to two tacos Mexican style.

Afternoon snack at Za's - Get the Garden Za, eat a few slices, and then save the leftovers for the road.

Afternoon Beers at the BBC in St. Matthew's

Appetizer at Maido's - Son of the Jade Dragon roll and a Stone Ruination on the patio

Early Dinner/More Appetzers at Goose Greek - might just go with the cornbread and fried green tomatoes

Main Dinner at El Mundo's - Chile Relleno unless the Grilled Fajita of the day featured Shrimp of some sort. Tough choice, then.

After Dinner Beers at the BBC Taproom

Take a walk down Bardstown Road and have a Caipirinia at La Bodega.

Midnight Snack at Ramsi's - probably get the Paella

Cheap Beer at the Granville.

With this Plan I'd have cold pizza and the leftover Paella for the road. Excellent planning on my part.

Edit: I know I'm supposed to be dining alone, but I'm either going to need a private driver or an all day taxi.
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.

Hey Ed - this is theoretical, right? You aren't leaving town?
I'll play:
My last day is a Saturday so I can get an omelette at the B'town Road Farmers Market and coffee from Days
Cafe au lait from Heine Brothers
Walk it off in Cherokee Park
Lunch at 211 Clover Lane - not sure of the dish but there will be wine
Bike ride on the River Walk
Watch the sun set at Captains Quarters with a couple of beers
I've never tried 610 Magnolia, but this would be a good time for it unless I feel more casual, in which case I'd go to Za's for a chicken artichoke extra cheese with whole-wheat crust and several draft beers
Walk down Bardstown Road
Sample some fine Bourbons at the Seelbach bar
Cab to the airport, stopping by Heine Brothers one last time for a latte

Hypothetical only, Ward and I'm still struggling with this one. At first I was going to put 12 hours but decided that wasn't enough time to get around town.

For nostalgic reasons I'd probably have to eat at both Jack Fry's and Impellizeri's, which I'm not sure I could realistically do in a 15-hour period. But those have been my favorite places to eat in Louisville since I was a kid, and when I didn't live here I tried my best to visit them whenever I was in town.
