Dining in West Baden Springs - completed

by Brad Keeton » Wed Nov 05, 2008 1:44 pm

Thanks for those that responded regarding recommendations in the West Baden Springs/French Lick, IN area. This quick review is a bit late in coming (we were there 2 weekends ago), but here goes.

Friday night we ate at the Beechwood Inn/Mansion in French Lick. It is a beautiful, huge old house sitting up on a hill, and also serves as a bed and breakfast. Unfortunately, it is surrounded by fast food sprawl for the most part, but if you're facing the Beechwood, the view is beautiful. There was a faily good sized bar area with a very good looking bar. There were multiple dining rooms (at least 3 as far as I could tell) spread throughout the first floor, and all looked great. The room we were in was dark and intimate, and very well appointed.

The menus were of the folded/lamintaed diner style, which gave us pause at a "fine-dining" establishment, but the food cleared that up quickly. Our meal WAY exceeded expectations, including a very good crispy duck and an intersting caesar salad in a kind of roll presentation. I'll pass on extensive details, but suffice it to say the food was as good as any of the better places in Louisville. The wine was marked up pretty severly, but the selection was good and quite interesting. Our server was great - attentive but not annoying, knowledgeable, and funny. She got a very solid tip.

Satruday we ate at the West Baden Springs signature restaurant, Sinclairs. We were somewhat underwhelmed there. We got a well-located table by a window overlooking the grounds, but the restaurant very much felt like a "hotel restaurant" and was way too bright. It was very elegant inside, and it looked like they retained a lot of the original woodwork and decor (remembering our tour of the facility before renovations began), but there was something missing.

Since 1875, the flagship restaurant at French Lick Hotel, is a steakhouse, we were hoping the Sinclairs menu would be light on steak and more innovative. Unforunately, we were wrong - it was very heavy on steaks and chops, with very little under $50+ per entree. I love quail, so I went with that. It was good, but lacked flavor and did not impress me (I was expecting a lot more for almost $40). My wife had the fried chicken, which is carved tableside. This was better, and a rather elegant tasting fried chicken. The wine was VERY expensive, but there was a lot to choose from. Our service was mixed. Our server was certainly knowledgeable and attentive, but he was rather curt, bordering on rude. He got a solid tip considering his attitude.

Overall, I highly recommend that everyone take a weekend getaway to West Baden Springs. It's less than an hour and a half drive, and the hotel and grounds are breathtaking, especially in the fall. There is a little for everyone - horseback riding, golf, spa, gambling at French Lick, and an amazing indoor (and outdoor) pool. There is not a lot to choose from regarding dining at this point (here's to hoping the resorts remain successful and some other local restaurants open), but don't pass up the Beechwood Inn. We were not that impressed with Sinclairs, but I would still probably choose it over 1875.

I should add that others recommended Sinclairs and seemed to enjoy it more than me - so if you're there give it a try.

Brad, thanks for the significant effort you put into your review. It's a real asset to the forum and I'm glad it will be available for future searches.

No problem, Robin. Interestingly, a larger portion of the two resorts' clientele comes from Indianapolis, even though Louisville is closer. I can see that changing in the foreseeable future (they are trying to market more heavily in this area), so some idea of what the options are will hopefully be helpful to someone down the line.

Brad,

Can I ask for a recommend on accomodations? Years ago my family stayed at French lick a couple of weekends and it was a great quick getaway weekend with kids. Now with the renovations, the room prices I saw were ( I thought) extremely high , even for a weekend getaway for just my husband and me. I toured West Baden pre renovation the last time I was at French Lick and was awed by the place. The Beechwood B&B sounds very interesting too. What do you recommend from what you saw/experienced?

Thanks,
Deb

Deb - We stayed at West Baden Springs, and you're right, the room prices are very high. They're aiming to be of Greenbrier caliber eventually (and in my opinion, not that far off at this point). There was a bar association event there that weekend, so my employer beared some of my costs, which helped soften the blow. You might call - they run specials and packages that are more reasonable, and the weekend we were there they were giving away "stay one night get one free" gift cards. They also provide you with various discount coupons on check in (20% off horseback riding, 20% off greens fees, free dessert at Sinclairs, etc.), which add up if you do a lot while you're there.

We stayed at French Lick a few years ago during mid-renovation and were happy, and have heard the rooms and facilities have improved greatly since then. French Lick is more family-friendly, and you have to deal with the casino crowd (I know that sounds contradictory, but my point is that French Lick is more inundated with non-guests and is louder). French Lick room prices are pretty high as well, and I think the difference makes West Baden well worth it.

I have not seen any rooms at the Beechwood, but a colleague of mine spent his wedding night there a few years ago and liked it. I think it is probably your typical bed and breakfast, but judging from the restaurant, I would have to think the rooms are very nice. My understanding is that they have renovated some and upgraded the rooms since WB/FL opened. Their website gives some sense of the rooms: http://www.beechwoodin.com/.
