If you eat enough chili you could definitely make a lunch out of the sampling alone. Or you could use the "sampling to find your favorite and then buy a real bowl of this chili" approach. Every year I have been, the booth number has increased to the point where it takes a good amount of time to hit all the booths. Some booths always under-prepare, so I recommend arriving sooner rather than later.
My usual approach is sample, sample, drink, sample, drink, eat something substantial, and then watch football for the rest of the afternoon. Included, without cost, are all the odd sights and sounds you only see at the PHT.
It's not a must-do event, except it falls on a Sunday, which makes the drinking/chili opportunity a nice capstone to the weekend.
