A great meal at Stoney River

by Steve P » Wed Oct 01, 2008 11:36 am

All,

Between trying to get boxes unpacked, cars and people properly licensed and all the other little things that come with moving (not to mention getting an insurance claim processed) it has been a busy couple of weeks. In the process we have managed to take some time out and sample a couple of restaraunts that are conveinient to our Oldham County location. Of particular note was a recent meal at "Stoney River Ledgendary Steaks". After reading Robin's review we were expecting something just a little north of average but were pleasantly surprised to with a meal that far exceeded that.. Not being big eaters, Becky and I shared an entree (16 ounce NY Strip) and found it one of the most tender and flavorful cuts we had had in some time. The veggies were crisp/tender and wonderfully seasoned and the salad was well prepared and of just the right proportion. The service (Jessica) was very professional withoutout being "stuffy" and not lacking in any way. The ambiance was very relaxed and pleasant and our only complaint would be that we have sat in more comfortable booths. Becky and I gave this meal a solid "9" on a 10 scale and (small) chain or not are looking forward to another visit.

Glad you guys had a good meal, but just wait until you eat at some of the great local restaurants we have! Stony River is a chain and as things go it doesn't have bad food, I personally don't like the flavoring they use other steaks and while their rolls are good they are the same as O'Charlie's which is owned by the same company.

For steaks try Pat's or Del Fresco's if you want the feel of an old style steak house. For a contemporary type steak try Z's Steakhouse and Oyster Bar or Jeff Ruby's, they're a little more expensive but worth it. Of course we also have Morton's and Ruth's Chris.

Louisville originals has many many great locally owned restraunts as members each of which offers some great dining choice.
Here's a link their website: Louisville Originals

Hope you guys continue to enjoy Louisville and its fine dining scene.

I dined there one time as a couple. Good food, nothing special, overpriced for what was received. I am NOT discounting the review of the original OP, but I thought it was 3 star food at a 5 star price. Dillons was way better. I mourn the loss of Dillons.
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.

I think Stoney River serves a great steak and really good sides. I like Dillon's but IMO Stoney River is in another league. Next time you want a steak drive about 1 mile farther to Seviche on Goose Creek and get the skirt steak with chimichurri or the gaucho steak; you won't regret the the extra 3 minutes it takes to get there.

Stoney River has become my favorite local steak restaurant (despite being a chain)....although not inexpensive, compared to Pat's it's a downright bargain....the NY Strip is my favorite, but next time try their grilled salmon -- excellent!

I am glad that the OP enjoyed Stony River. I went there a while ago for a business function and I went in with a closed mind. I thought of it as another chain in a chain part of town. However, I was pleasently surprised by the place. The service was great as was the food. I can't remember specifically what I had but I remember being quite pleased. With that said, DelFriscos is still my favorite place for a steak, but Stony River has definitely moved into the discussion when my husband and I want steak. If it werent so far away, we would go. But why go way out there when DelFriscos is right down the street. Chain or independant really doesnt matter to me. Make good food, and I will eat it.
