FWIW, I tried to check out BMCH this morning (have been meaning to do so for a while now). Be advised, they don't open until 7:30 am. By 7:30, if I am not halfway through my second cup, something's wrong. I still can't wait to try it...it just won't happen on the morning commute.
My favs in town are (tied) Jackson's and Sunergos. Peered into the (dark) BMCH this morning. Looked nice--far and away different from "thrift store castoff" decor at, say, Sunergos. Different, but not better to me. I wouldn't change a thing about Sunergos.
Keep doing what you're doing too, Christopher. Well, that, and expand!
As for Starbucks (the start of the thread)...Way too sterilized for my tastes. I'm in for coffee...DON'T try to sell me CDs, mints, pens, etc! Don't force a different naming convention for your sizes on me (I've noticed that when I've ordered a 'small' or 'medium' they ALWAYS make it a point to repeat their size back to you. Ugh.) And aside from all that, I think their coffee is overly caffienated. I have a high tolerance for the drug, but a cup of Starbucks coffee can give me the jitters.
Won't pass judgement on them (business-wise) because I don't have enough information. While I don't like cloned franchises popping up all over the place, one (seemingly) positive effect of Starbucks is the increased coffee awareness and culture. They have brought decent coffee to the masses (large, nationwide scales here). So long as the "coffee" awareness/culture doesn't become "milkshake" awareness/culture. IMHO, Starbucks does a pretty good business in peddling (what I consider) to be hot chocolate and milkshakes.
