Introduction: Hi from Nimbus Couzin at Ray's Monkey House

by Nimbus Couzin » Mon Sep 29, 2008 4:33 pm

Hi Everyone!!

I'm not sure where to start here, but I wanted to say hello to the forum first. Hello!

My name is Nimbus Couzin (yes, my real name), and I'm the owner/roastmaster/chief janitor at Ray's Monkey House Coffeeshop and Roastery on Bardstown Rd. We're located between Cumberland Brews and Cafe 360, in the shop where Twice Told Books used to be (for all those who remember Harold's old place).

Our focus is on high quality coffee, by the cup or by the bag. And we offer it in a relaxed atmosphere, complete with more couches than you'd find at your average coffeeshop, along with a meeting space in the back open to community groups or whoever.

We are very progressive, and you'll immediately notice our compostable cups, straws, etc, WHICH WE ACTUALLY COMPOST (our trash area has three bins: compost, landfill and recycling). We show documentaries every monday night on various political, environmental and activist issues - movies you wouldn't find elsewhere. Activist photos adorn our walls. We've been showing the debates and speeches on big screen and it has been a blast with great turnouts! WHAS even stopped by Friday during the debate.

We're kid-friendly (two play areas including a wooden train set), so stay-at-home parents often come by during the day, and we're also adult-friendly (we recently added beer and wine, and have a great beer selection including local brews and five beers on tap). We also have live music more and more - we have a Bluegrass jam every Tuesday night from 8-midnight that has been going well (so come on down to watch or participate - all invited!)...

Etc, etc....we also bake our own vegan pastries (try our blueberry scones and chocolate chip cookies), make our own hummus, and have recently added sandwiches and wraps from Amazing Grace. Plus stuff like homemade granola, yogurt and bagels. We try to have vegan options for everything we offer.

OH! We ONLY use organic milk in all our drinks! So no chemmies in your drinks. No extra charge for soymilk either....

Blah blah blah...I could go on and on....

I think I'll post some more stuff in another thread - this one is going on too long. (I'll post our beer list at least).

A tiny bit more about myself. My name has been mentioned at least a couple times on this forum. I only have one PhD (not two, as someone posted, but thanks!). It is in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics. I taught Physics at IUS before starting up Ray's Monkey House. Prior to that, I founded and ran a microbrewery/brewpub in Tucson (named Nimbus Brewing Company). So I am a beer geek, which explains our extensive beer menu. (when I was at IUS, I'd hang out with people like Roger Baylor at Rich O's). I learned the art of roasting from various professional roasters around the country, and I still maintain a bunch of contacts with home-roasters around the world in order to seek out the best green coffee out there. I'm always in search of the "perfect cup of coffee." And as a roaster, the only way to be good is to never stop learning, and to continuously balance Art and Science. Our roaster is in the front window, and we're going to schedule open roasting nights when the weather gets cooler, so be on the lookout if you're interested in joining in on a roast. We are truly mom and pop, with my wife - Jody - and I doing the baking and roasting. We also work a few shifts behind the counter. My 5 year old (Leone Ray) will be a great helper too someday soon, and our baby - Rain - may not be far behind. We live 2 blocks from the shop - truly LOCAL.

So stop by, say hello, and enjoy a drink or bite to eat.....we're open early til late (7:30am-midnight on most nights).

Hope to see ya!!

Talk about coincidence. As I type this I am wearing my Nimbus Brewing t-shirt ("think nimbus, drink nimbus" & monkey on the back) I got ten years ago when I lived in Tucson. It's getting threadbare in spots but I refuse to let it go. Nimbus brewed an excellent selection of micros, and I have no doubt his coffee will be made with the same care. Best of luck with your new venture, Nimbus!

I've met other mothers here a couple of times, and I love it. Our kids play safely behind the kiddy gate, and we get good coffee without fear of a hideous scalding accident.

Those without children should not be scared because it's kid friendly. There's plenty of space for all.

Thanks ya'll,

Cool Bill, about the shirt coincidence. I know of at least a couple other people with our old Nimbus Brewing Co. shirts here in town. Of course, I've got several - we had a lot of different versions, including Tye-dye....(one of my favorites). Look out for Ray's Monkey House shirts coming soon!

And thanks for the kid-friendly compliment Eliza. As a parent, it is nice to be able to meet up with your friends and have a cup of coffee while your kid(s) play nearby safely with other kids. That is sort of what we were aiming for. With a gradual transition as the day goes on towards a more adult atmosphere. We often have a nice calm environment here, whether kids are present or not...

Cheers!

Nimbus,

It was a pleasure meeting you last night. Hopefully our rowdy, nerd group did not keep you guys there too late after close. We tend to have those reading groups on a completely irregular basis, but I'll push for your place again as the location next time we meet.

I, though, should be in much sooner. My eye noticed the "fall seasonals" sitting next to the beer cooler last night. I'll have to stop in with student papers this weekend and make the response process more enjoyable (not that it isn't already enjoyable!) by enjoying a pumpkin ale or two. I've never been the coffee house type, but that all changes when the menu has a killer beer list. It was a little weird drinking in bright light (as compared to most dark-ish bars and pubs), but it definitely made the reading easier on the eyes!

Best wishes for success for that nice little place you got there.
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.

Thank Matthew,

The pleasure was all mine. Very nice to meet you. It was a little chaotic (as sometimes happens around here) so I wish I had more time to chat - next time hopefully.

We do have the Dogfish Head Pumpkin Ale now, which is definitely one of the better ones around - "They add real pumpkins and a host of spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugar, among them) to create a pumpkin beer with a ton of flavor."

Real Pumpkin - YAY!

Also, we've added a couple Kentucky Ale products, one their mainstream ale, and the other is their Bourbon Barrel Ale. Bourbon stouts are normal, but they've aged their ale in Bourbon Barrels for an intense bourbon flavor. Very cool....

Well, back to work. Tonight is our Debate Party (with bingo cards and all - fun) alongside our weekly Tuesday night bluegrass jam. (debate upstairs, bluegrass downstairs). Should be an interesting combination for Ray' Monkey House....

Seeeeya,

You don't drive a "pirate ship" pickup truck by chance?

Heehee...ahoy matey...

But alas, I don't think it I'm the one. I do have a big F250 (old - 1985) for my work truck. It has a big camping topper (great for sleeping in). A real tank, and great for hauling around those 150 pound sacks of coffee, and all the other big stuff I encounter. OH, and my license plate says: "MONKEY" (I got lucky)

I also have a police interceptor rescue vehicle. Working sirens and all.

And 3+ bicycles!!! (I live 2 blocks from the shop, so not a bad commute. It was quicker when I lived upstairs from the shop - the first few months that Ray's was open. Kinda nice literally living at work, but some definite drawbacks)

Peace, hope you find your pirate.....

I am pretty sure I have done business with both the drivers of the police and pirate truck at Corken Steel.

I think I sold the venting material for the roasters at Ray's and some copper for the pirate truck.

Small world.
