I'll be in Portland for 2 nights. It seems my favorite noodle shop recently closed :-( So, any suggestions for dinner would be appreciated. We will be staying in Tigard so Breakfast will be at the Original, Original Pancake House, yummmmmmm.

Thanks

Drive south on 22nd Street until you reach W Market Street. Take a left and drive back towards downtown Louisville. In four blocks, take a right on S 18th Street. At the end of the fourth block, Jay's Cafeteria should be on your right, near the corner of Muhammad Ali Blvd. Jay's is a great steam-table/cafeteria type place, sort of a meat-and-three, with great southern vegetables and sides like macaroni and cheese...

Oh, wait. You meant Portland, Oregon or Portland, Maine. Didn't you.

Oopsie! :P

It's worse than you think ... isn't Jay's gone? Best bet from Portland, Louisville, I'm afraid, is to jump on I-64 and go northwest across the Sherman Minton Bridge to New Albany.

Oh, yuck - I remembered hearing they "might close" - I guess I just averted my eyes from the rest of the story. I always loved Jay's - when I worked downtown I made a regular practice of dragging my co-workers there for lunch.

So, anyway, hey! Didn't the Southside Inn reopen earlier this year? Now, that's a forum offline in the making, right there.

I don't mean to thread-jack, Neal. I've never been to Portland, but I'm sure there are plenty of forumites who have. Just casting about at random, I found Portland Food and Drink, a blog that seems pretty independent-minded. Probably you already found it for yourself while I was wasting time making a joke about Louisville!

The bacon maple doughnut at Voodoo Doughnuts is a must.

Hit any and all happy hours in downtown. My favorite was probably the Portland City Grill. It's on the 30th floor of a building over looking the city. It looks swanky but it's Portland, so it's open to all sorts. Happy hours are really popular there. Good, cheap apps and drink specials. I wish Louisville would get into this habit.

Another great place is Huber's again, downtown:

Excellent happy hour with a great, nostalgic character.

Try to hit one of the lunch carts downtown as well. They're everywhere and you can find any type of food from all over the world.

Oh my god, I didn't know what to do with myself while I was reading this. I thought, "how could Marsha possibly mistake...". Tears in the eyes right now.

I actually work on 24th street in Portland. We get carry out every damn day, and it always comes comes from far away.

Fan of Marsha funnies!!!

While I can't suggest a specific restaurant, I would search out a restaurant serving the magnificent Olympia oyster, a tiny succulent bite of seafood heaven. If I remember correctly it is the only oyster native to the Pacific Northwest and I think it is the smallest oyster. In my mind it is definitely the "sweetest" one.

Great Link Marsha. That combined with your deserts allows me to forgive you bashing my mistake of not pointing out which Portland I was refering to :-)

BTW..... The Southside did reopen after a MAJOR cleanup and renovation. I've been there twice and thought it was as good as before, but, my history doesn't go as far back as some with the place.

And thanks Adam. Looks like some good choices as well.
