Devino's Downtown "C" Rating

by Elizabeth S » Thu Sep 25, 2008 1:43 pm

I got this picture from a friend of mine of Devino's Deli downtown. What a novel way to try and disguise their "C" Rating!

That's Chutzpah, all right!

I expect it's legal, too. But I also think that if I were the inspector and saw that, I would be EXTRA tough on my return visit.

Yeah, Go Cards and all... but I hope no one is fooled. I can sometimes give places the benefit of the doubt on a "B" rating, but I don't go into "C"s. I hope it's still pretty noticeable.

The sketchiness is why I wanted to post it here. Apparently, it is attached to and/or associated with the new club called Prime Lounge. I noticed that the C-J/Metromix loves going there and taking pictures. Apparently it's the hot new place for the young ones. I guess drunk club goers don't care what they are eating but I hope that our office does not decide to order lunch in from there. I really wonder whether they are doing it tongue in cheek or whether they really think they are getting away with something.

All kidding aside, when a place receives a "C", don't they have X amount of days to correct the problem areas? I was in the restaurant industry for 24 years, but I worked in outlying counties and we had different rules. Also, I believe a "C" rating could happen for something as simple as an employee’s drink in a food preparation area. It doesn't necessarily mean there are food contamination issues, though there could be.

You're pretty much right on target, Doogy, although it does take something worse than the employee's drink example. But a refrigerator that won't hold the correct cold temperature, or dishwashing water that's not hot enough can do it, I'm pretty sure.

A lot of people in the industry consider the system seriously flawed because you're allowed to recover from a "C" in a week or so, but a "B" lasts for six months.

I know that a "C" rating doesn't have to mean some sort of infestation, but the point is that you just don't know what the problem is when you drive by the place and see a "C" on the door. It may be something relatively harmless, or it may not. I just wait till they've corrected the problems.

And Elizabeth, about the C-J posting all those pictures from that club - those photo galleries are borderline soft porn! Maybe that's the problem with this restaurant. There has to be some sort of health code violation for food preparation in close proximity to naked people.

I remember a while back (a few months ago maybe) that Cafe Metro had a "C" Rating. However, right next to it, they posted an explanation on why they received it and how they were resolving the situation. I thought it was a great approach and I had no reservations about eating there (no pun intended). I think that approach works better than this one.

For those who don't know...a "B" is really, IMO, worse than a "C", a "C" is because of one thing that needs to be corrected and can be done so in 24 hours or so. A "B" is a myriad of dings if you would, that drops the place in dirtiness...

Actually you, do. If you call the Health Department, they'll tell you exactly what the violation(s) are, and I'm pretty sure they list them on a website somewhere.

I certainly am not here to condone or defend bad food handling, but 99% of the time it is a combination of a couple minor errors. In 9 years I've worked in 7 different restaurants, and 3 out of 7 had a C at one point. One time it was for something as simple as a sink that didn't drain properly, but it was in a part of the restaurant that wasn't even used, and the sink hadn't been used in years. Another time it was because a clueless server left her coffee near a food prep area.

Don't get me wrong, stringent standards are a good thing, but don't judge these places too harshly, chances are they want to fix it, and quick (in fact with a C you have to or it forces you to close) and it's really not very difficult to get a C, even in an extremely clean restuarant.

that said....the pic is freakin' hilarious!

I totally get that a "C" doesn't mean that the place is a sewer. I've worked in several different restaurants, and I know how stringent the inspections are, and how you can get in huge trouble for leaving a drink near the food prep., etc. I also know that you are free to find out the nature of the violations - they used to publish them in the C-J. But with so many great places to eat in Louisville, maybe I don't feel like calling the Health Dept. to get more info. Maybe it's after-hours and the Health Dept. is closed. Maybe I'll just wait awhile to go back there until they've cleared up the problem. I don't judge too harshly for sure... I just let them work out the issue and go back either when I find out that it's minor, or when they've resolved it.
