Excellent Argentinian cookie now at Caffe Classico

by Robin Garr » Mon Sep 22, 2008 12:05 pm

It's called alfajores ("ahl-fah-hore-ayz"), and it's a classic Argentine coconut cookie filled with dulce de leche. Tommie said they are made to order for Caffe Classico by Najla's Cookies and that they sell out fast when he gets them. I can see why ... in taste and texture, they are truly addictive.

OH SAY IT AIN"T SO!

When we were in Argentina, these cookies were a daily gift from heaven! We brought back a few boxes for friends and for us, but alas, they left this world a while back (only to be resurrected on our waistlines).

We are going back to Buenos Aires in winter, but until then Cafe Classico has become my new favorite place! :D :D

Thanks for posting about these, Robin. Because I had read about them, when we got out eggplant parm. pizza at Caffe Classico last night, we also picked up a couple of these cookies. Man, were they good! So chewy. They tasted like fall to me, and I wanted to have a cup of hot tea or cider with them. Next time.

I may just have to go over to Caffe Classico this afternoon. I want another one! Or two, they're small ...

Excellent doesn't describe - as my kids say - these are "crack cookies!"

I had a meeting on Frankfort Ave. this morning, and remembered this post, but couldn't remember where to get alfajores!!!
I went to 2 different places, then it hit me - Caffe Classico!

I love alfajores!!! These are much bigger than the ones I had in Peru', but they are awesome! The "Peruvian" is the small, buttery cookie, dulce de leche, dusted w/ powder sugar - these have a hint of lemon (I think) with coconut - just as good, just slightly different.

Reminds me of our evening "lunche" with sandwiches, espresso and these incredible cookies :)
I need to visit LaPunta, Peru' again soon...
