Turning a steak house thread into a cake thread warms this vegetarian's heart!

I saw a Food Network Challenge last night that was a wedding cake battle. They had a couple who submitted a short video of themselves - each baker got to watch the tape, and then baked a wedding cake based solely on what was on the tape. At the end of the contest, the couple picked the winner and that was their wedding cake.

Marina Sousa from California won with one of the most amazing non-traditional wedding cakes I had ever seen! It looked like it was floating on a bed of handmade truffles....

That picture only gives you an idea as that is probably only halfway done....

That show is a couple of years ago, but the cake was quite lovely. She had to hold it overnight for the wedding the next day, didn't she? She put it in the reach in cooler and it suffered some damage, but she was able to repair it. That is fondant, and I love working with fondant. the design possibilities are wonderful! And for the record, good fondant tastes good.

Back to the red meat.

Had the rib-eye at Bistro New Albany tonight. Was it the best I ever had?

Hmmm . . .

I thought a lot while eating it (seriously). A lot of steaks these days are pretty heavenly seasoned. This can be the stunning marinade and chimichurri at Palermo Viejo or the heavily salted versions at Texas Roadhouse. The seasoning on the ribeye at BNA is subtle, so the taste of the meat really comes through. This meant for me, that the first bite was underwhelming because it was not nearly as brash a taste as I was expecting from "the best steak I've ever had." However, as I made my way through every bite, I began to appreciate the flavor more and more. I can say it was much better than most steaks I've eaten, and probably runs a dead heat with two others: Palermo Viejo and Bad Brad's BBQ Joint in Pawhuska, OK (which lives on in my romanticized, somewhat hazy memory).

The Mousse at the close was a lovely touch to share between us at the end.

All in all a lovely dinner and evening in resurgent New Albany.
