Mag lists nation's top pizza chains

by Robin Garr » Tue Sep 16, 2008 10:36 am

PMQ Pizza Magazine has published their list of the Top 200 Pizza Chains, ranked on the basis of the number of "units" (individual restaurants).

We'll just give you the Top 20 from that list (and the number of units/locations):

1. Pizza Hut: 14,759
2. Domino's Pizza: 8,641
3. Papa John's Pizza: 3,238
4. Little Caesars: 2,000
5. Noble Roman's Pizza: 1,400
6. Casey's Carry-Out Pizza: 1355
7. Papa Murphy's Take 'N' Bake Pizza: 1,073
8. Sbarro's Italian Eatery: 1,040
9. Godfather's Pizza: 656
10. Cici's Pizza: 631
11. Hungry Howie's Pizza: 575
12. Pizza Pro: 552
13. Chuck E. Cheese's: 537
14. Round Table Pizza: 505
15. Papa Gino's: 365
16. Pizza Inn: 335
17. Fox's Pizza Den: 315
18. California Pizza Kitchen: 239
19. Simple Simon's Pizza: 227
20. Uno Chicago Grill: 225

Here's the article with a list of the top 50. Unfortunately, you have to pay big bucks for the detailed stuff. I wonder if Boombozz is big enough to make the list?

"Papa Murphy's Take 'N' Bake Pizza"

It really iks me that this place is classified as a Restaurant when they bake nothing on site. I guess Kroger is now a restaurant as well.
I am the original Mike G, never mind the impostor.

I am kind of a big deal.

I sort of see your point, Mike, although when I checked out PaPa Murphy's upon its arrival, it's clear that they do the food prep onsite and assembly to your specific order, so it's a step closer to a "restaurant" than Kroger's is. I also thought it made a pretty good pie, not up to the best local pizza joints of course (a home oven is not a pizza oven), but pretty good.

If Papa Murphy's is a pizza chain and so is Kroger, Sam's, Costco, Fresh Market and are many others who produce pizzas in store for take home baking! They all do about the same amount of in store preparation.

Pizza Hut is ok in a pinch. Hungry Howies isn't bad either. Most of that list you can flush IMO.

I'm lucky that I live in the delivery zone for Boombazz. My pizza fix is easily treated in that regard.

Of course the list is only based on the number of stores, not quality or customer feedback. If those were taken into account I'm sure the list would look very different! Most of those at the top of this list wouldn't even be on a list based on quality and feedback.

Exactly so ... I tried to make that clear in the intro post, but looking at the headline, I could have done a better job there.

I'd kill for a Donatos here,

Used to kill that in Lexington, not sure why Louisville doesn't have one.

It's more like 'snack' pizza, but it hits the spot sometimes --------> especially the 'Mariachi' pizza!

Boombozz didn't make the list. Nos. 190-200 all had 12 locations, and Boombozz has five, I believe. The only other Ky. entry I saw was Snappy Tomato at No. 53, with 68 units.

I've never had Snappy Tomato. Is it edible?

You can access the full list via that link. At the top of the page you'll see arrows to advance to the next page.

Re: Donato's. I think they're still trying to recover from the period where they were owned by McDonald's. The founders bought the company back and they are getting the concept back on its feet before they try to expand. I've eaten at a Donato's in Somerset near Lake Cumberland. You're right, it isn't bad.
