A new "MEGA SHELTER" in the Highlands?

by Allison Williams » Mon Sep 15, 2008 3:56 am

A proposed new "MEGA SHELTER" in the Highlands? What kind of economic impact would that have on local businesses and eateries?

Just a question... Even with the knocking down of the low-income and government funded housing (projects) in the East Market/Liberty district of Louisville and building mixed income housing to create a sense of rebirth in that area, the shelters still deter so many from making a trip give patronage to many establishments after a certain time of day and has had a huge impact on the revenue generated by local business owners, especially restaurants. What would that do to the Highlands?

I am just asking the question. It is a proposed shelter for Women & Children at the old Mercy Academy. Is it the stigma of "shelters" that we all fear and the possibility of more panhandling and crime that is experienced downtown? Again, I ask the question what kind of impact would a shelter for Women & Children have on local establishments in the Highland Area? Its for Women & Children for pete's sake... why am I still leary?

I don't know enough information about the proposal to give a stance either way. Unfortunately just hearing the possibility of a "shelter" in that area makes me wary. I am just curious to see what other's views are concering the subject.

Reminds me of the old George Carlin 'N.I.M.B.Y.' (not in my backyard) routine.
Consumer elitism over human compassion.
Of course there will be concerns and stigmas associated with introducing a 'shelter' into the highlands. But this is also a great opportunity to extend a hand to families in need as well as to showcase how open the minds and the hearts of the highlands can be.
Handled properly, this endeavor could turn out to be one fantastic example of kindness and outreach. On the other hand; with narrow-minded, fear-driven agendas, it will surely become a disastrous have vs have-not peeing contest and witch-hunt.

From my experiences with Wayside Mission, the problems associated with shelters are at the Men's shelter. The Women and Children shelter does not have the same situations. It is mostly women with children that are in need. This is not the hardcore homeless you see around. Wayside also has some strict rules about visitors and signing in and out. The neighborhood needs to look at what Wayside plans before reacting to the prejudices of a few. Before you all start saying it is not your neighborhood... I have 2 shelters in mine, one a family shelter, and have had very few problems with them. There are more problems in urban neighborhoods with those homeless and intoxicants that refuse to go to shelters.

I actually think Wayside Mission should have pushed the point a little more to expand their old location. Considering they already had an agreement with the association before a few big mouths started shouting they should've held their ground instead of taking the loss. I personally think the proposed location is great. There could certainly be a lot of worse uses for that building. Every area needs to do their part and the proposed facility for the Highlands will be very low key and well managed. We have the Central State facility near us which a lot of people don't like but in all reality it has to be someplace. Hopefully Wayside will be able to take advantage of the opportunity to use this building.
