Rye whiskeys...

by jpdurbin » Sat Mar 03, 2007 7:37 pm

I had the pleasure of tasting Jameson’s Rye whiskey the other day. Pleasant! Knowing little of Rye Whiskeys, what is a decent Rye for the price (<$30)?

is Jameson's rye whiskey different than their regular Irish whiskey?

or are we even talking about the same brand?

I lurve me some Jameson.

and it's getting to be around that time of year when I find myself consuming more quantities of it than usual.

JP, I'm not much of a rye common-sewer, but I understand that Pappy Van Winkle makes (or sometimes makes?) a small amount of rye that is supposed to be good enough to make you hear choirs of angels sing.

I'm guessing that you won't touch it for anything close to $30, though.

It's an 8 year a believe, and I've picked it up at Old Town before for right around $30.

But it has limited availability.
If you see one on the shelf, i advise picking it up...
and please let me know if you see it.

Same goes for Sazerac 18 year rye, and Eagle Rare 17 year (bourbon). (both about $50 each)
Ultra limit releases... and i'm always hunting for the next release.
They tend to sell out quiiiick.

I have a little of the Eagle Rare stashed away, but I'm keeping my eyes peeled.

I put vegetables in your desserts, white chocolate with your fish and other nonsense stuff that you think shouldn't make sense, but coax the nonsense into something that makes complete sense in your mouth. Just open your mind, mouth and eat.

Rye whiskey.

I take great pleasure in going down to Maker's Mark Lounge and experimenting with their flights of different whiskeys. They have a great variety, including some ryes. They have some flights on their menu, but I prefer to make my own. That way, you can have a lot of fun with the abundance of whiskeys they offer. It's just a suggestion and I hope you may try it out.

If you do go, try this drink:

SAZERAC | 9
It is rumored that the Sazerac was the first cocktail. It
is reported to have been created by Antoine Peychaud, inventor
of Peychaud's Bitters. He owned a drugstore in New Orleans where friends gathered to imbibe an elixir concocted of brandy, absinthe and bitters. In time, brandy was replaced by rye whiskey and absinthe was replaced by Pernod. The Sazerac bar is still in existence, located in the Fairmont Hotel in New Orleans.

Just a paragraph from the website:

This is an absolutely exquisite cocktail. As you sip it, you come across layer after layer of flavor -- the warmth and glowing burn of the rye, effused with the flavors of spice and honey, the bite of the bitters balanced with the sweetness of the sugar, with the subtle yet complex flavor of the anise underneath and the perfume of the lemon oil from the twist feel like a symphony inside your mouth. This is also a drink that warms up well, revealing even more flavors. Sip it very slowly. Savor it. Take your time with it.

I love that drink. Go get one.
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.

Rye Whiskeys

You should try Rittenhouse Bonded Rye. For the money (usually at or around 20 bucks) it can't be beat.

The Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye is delicious, but hard to find and expensive.

Kentucky Vintage 21 year old rye is another very good but pricey rye.

Bourbons and Rye

by Joe C » Sun Mar 04, 2007 1:50 pm

I too am a fan of Sazerac Rye.
If you are a bourbon drinker you should give Bulleit Bourbon a try. It is 6 yrs old, and 90 proof. It has the highest content of rye of all the bourbons - about 30%. A very good sipper considering its young age and reasonable price - $22/ bottle.

Enjoy
