Who knew? Bourbon pizza at Tony Boombozz

by Robin Garr » Fri Sep 12, 2008 11:47 am

Unedited news release just in, a bit late in arriving, as September is well under way. I've got to try me one of them Bourbon pizzae!

Pizza Chain Adds a Hint of 'Roses' for One-of-a-Kind Recipe

Cooking with Bourbon is no secret to chefs - it's most often used to add flavor to meats, breads and many desserts. However, the Louisville-based pizza chain, Tony Boombozz Pizza is taking Bourbon inspired cuisine a step further to introduce its first-ever Kentucky Bourbon Pizza. The pizza will feature Four Roses Bourbon in its recipe and will be available this September, a time when Kentucky celebrates Bourbon Heritage Month and the internationally-known Kentucky Bourbon Festival.

"This time, the Italian pie everyone knows and loves will get a little taste of Kentucky as we include Four Roses Bourbon to our recipe," said Tony Palombino, owner of Tony Boombozz Pizza. "It was sort of a collaborative idea between me and Four Roses' Master Distiller Jim Rutledge."

The Kentucky Bourbon Pizza's special barbecue sauce will be what carries the authentic Bourbon flavor. Other toppings will include hickory-grilled chicken, smoky bacon, roma tomatoes and red onions. For a stronger taste of Kentucky, customers can order their Four Roses-inspired pizza with extra bourbon-barbecue sauce or a "shot" of sauce on the side for dipping .

The inspiration for the first-ever Kentucky Bourbon Pizza came one night during a bartending competition organized by Four Roses where Palombino, a self-proclaimed Bourbon fanatic, had been asked to serve as judge.

"As I was introducing Tony as one of our judges, I hinted that a bourbon-flavored pizza should be his next big creation," said Rutledge, Four Roses' Hall of Fame Master Distiller. "It wasn't long after the event that Tony was experimenting with Four Roses in his recipes."

"There's not many people that don't like pizza, and Kentucky is the birthplace of Bourbon," added Palombino. "So, to me, it sounded like a winning combination and something that I had never heard of being done before."

The Kentucky Bourbon Pizza will also be featured as the 'Anniversary Pizza' during Tony Boombozz' 10th Anniversary Celebration in October.

Palombino is known throughout the area for his famous gourmet pizza and has been awarded many national and international pizza competition first-place prizes.

Tony Boombozz Pizza will begin selling Kentucky Bourbon Pizza in each of the four Louisville locations (Springhurst, Highlands, Crescent Hill/St. Matthews and Jeffersontown) on Wednesday, Sept. 10.
