CRAFT BEER VS COMMERCIAL BEER AT THE CPC

by Shawn Vest » Tue Sep 09, 2008 4:33 pm

just looked at our sales numbers again
craft beer sales versus commercial beer sales
5 to 1
import beer sales versus commercial beer sales
3 to 1

for the record, the commercial beers at the CPC are Bud Light, Coors Light, Michelob Ultra, and Miller Lite

craft beers include Rogue, Sierra, Bells, Allagash, Founders, Three Floyds, New Holland, BBC, and several more (about 30 selections total)
import beers include Lindemans, Delirium, Spaten, Weihenstphaner, Youngs, Belhaven, and several more (about 15 selections total)

craft beer dominates

who would've thought it

even i'm surprised by the numbers

Music to my ears. Every time someone drinks Bud Light, a kitten dies.

I first want to qualify what I am going to say by stating that I am glad people are branching out and trying craft beers rather than commercial beers. I really do not want to get into the merits of craft beer or how terrible commercial beers are. I just want to comment that if you have 30 choices compared to 4 choices, and 15 choices compared to 4 choices, the ratios you witnessed should be about right.

ken i almost choked from laughter

and i think Elizabeth makes a valid point
i also don't list commercial beers on our beer menu and i only promote (signs, specials, etc) craft/imports

but anyone that is familiar with the Charlestown market would argue that they're a commercial beer drinking community and i'd be hard pressed selling beer for twice the price of bud/coors/miller (much less four or five times the price)

i certainly thought that given the number of choices i'd get a 2:1 or 3:1 ratio, but all in all selling six or seven good beers for every bad beer i sell is remarkable

thanks to all the good beer drinkers
