We're going to the aquarium in Newport this week

by Marsha L. » Mon Sep 08, 2008 6:55 pm

John's on vacation, and it's his birthday week (30th!!), so we're going to the aquarium Thursday or Friday.

I looked on the Cincy forum, and didn't see anything specifically about "near the aquarium", so...let your foodie flags fly. What's near there? I know there are a lot of chains (we can go to a chain, it's not "forbidden"), but I'd rather do an indie...if we don't have to re-park or re-map. Somebody told me there's a good Mexican restaurant "across from Borders" within walking distance to the aquarium - is that one a chain? If so...what chain?

I have a terrible memory, but let me opine... there's a place called Pacific Moon, I think??? I've never eaten there, but I got a tour prior to their opening weekend about two years ago, and they have really cool floors (very oceanic) and the owner seemed hip. Pretty sure the menu would resemble ?Asiatique? I hope. Anyway, there real close to the aquarium and have a ton of space, as well boasting local ownership in a what is probably a considerably corporate environment. I'll google them after I submit to make sure I'm not leading you astray.

Might I suggest Cafe Istanbul? http://www.cincinnati.com/freetime/dini ... anbul.html

I have many pix of my dining experience there. PM me if you'd like to view them.
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.

So here goes my first url attempt - we'll see how it works: http://www.pacificmoononthelevee.com/menu.htm

But as it turns out, not much like Asiatique at all. Probably good anyway, though.

Might I suggest Chalk?
http://jeanrobertgroup.com/chalk
It is in Covington, not too far from the aquarium.
Here are directions from the aquarium

Marsha,

Since Jackie brought it up:
Ahh, anything Jean Robert is good. Seriously.

Their French Bistro - have to check on the name- is very close to the River on the Cincy side across from Newport. You could either park on the Kentucky side and walk across one of the bridges to downtown Cincy , or take a short drive over to Cincy. ( I walked easily from the Underground Railroad museum in heels). The food was very good, prices reasonable, and there isn't anything like it in Louisville since the French place on Douglas Loop closed a couple of years ago. I thoroughly enjoyed a visit there a year ago.

I'll check and send you the name- Deb

Hofbrauhaus!

Beer's excellent, and the food, while not entirely Bavarian, is adequate so you can bring more excellent beer!

Marsha,

I'll second Chalk, on the Kentucky side and easy to find. Cafe Istanbul is also good. Avoid Johnny Rockets like Guantanamo Bay. Happy Birthday to John, we'll see you next week.

Edward and I ate lunch at Cafe Istanbul when we went to the Newport Aquarium. We both loved it. Their Meze platter is almost as good as LouLou's. Here is the site for the whole complex: http://www.newportonthelevee.com/

Unfortunately Pacific Moon on the Levee is closed for good. I had dinner with the owner Alex Chin a couple of weeks ago. You may want to check out Shanghai Mama in downtown Cincy, not too far from Newport.
