Impromptu forum offline tomorrow at DakShin?

by Robin Garr » Fri Sep 05, 2008 11:41 am

That's the new Southern Indian restaurant out at the Eastview Shopping Center on Bardstown Road at the end of Breckinridge Lane, same place where the Gordita Trailer pulls up on several nights.

Forumite Mary Anne and Mary and I are going to meet there tomorrow at noon to check out the buffet and the hospitality, which is said to be awesome.

Anyone care to join us? It's just 12 miles southeast of Crescent Hill ... and gas prices are going down, sort of.

I think you might have typo'd the spelling, isn't it Dashkin? It's right around the corner from my house. The buffet is good but not as extensive as Shalimar or Indian Palace. I've eaten there in the evening and ordered off their menu, I thought it was very good.

What time is this going to be?

Er, I got the spelling from Mary Anne! (What a wuss I am, blaming someone else.)

From my understanding, DakShin or Dashkin features Southern Indian cuisine as well, something that Shalimar and India Palace don't do, and which I love. But again, the point here is to go check out a place I haven't been yet.

Would be great to see you again, Brian ... last time was the Bats last year, as I recall. C'mon down - as noted (but a little buried) in my original post, we're meeting at noon.

I'll be in Green Lot A at PCJS, first cooking breakfast, then maybe something on the grill for a light lunch before the game. If we hang around longer than an hour after the game, then a light dinner too. (Plus liquid refreshments. The Lagers tailgate near us so we have a fun exchange of alcohol - Brown-Forman spirits and home brew.)

Mary Anne always likes it when she is right...and believe me, it doesn't happen often! The food at DakShin is very different than Shalimar. I find it more flavorful, although not necessarily hotter, but sometimes hotter...I am not sophisticated enough to describe it beyond that...it's good, really really good, and the Bollywood video feed is great. :D The Waitstaff is extremely helpful and friendly, something I don't get from Shalimar. I've learned a ton about Indian life from these guys, they are very eager to share their culture and their experiences. I wondered to one of them why I never see Indian women working at Indian restaurants, there are Asian women working in Asian restaurants, Mexican women in Mexican restaurants...why not in Indian restaurants? Apparently working class Indian women just don't come over here, either due to familial constraints or monetary limitations. If one person can make it over, it's the male member of the family. Who knew?

It's my favorite Indian restaurant. The food is very good, different, but not necc. hotter as previously noted.

YMMV

Excellent, Bill! We'll look forward to seeing you. Mary and I will leave here right at 11:30, so we should be on the premises by or a little before noon.

Can't make it, but this place is near my house and I can attest to how good it is and how eager the staff is to serve you and make you feel comfortable. We ordered the buffet, but mysterious food items kept showing up on the table for us to try (but not on the bill). It's a bit out of my wife's adventure limits, unfortunately, but I'm working on that. I'm assuming the whole tiki bar/canoe thing is left over from a previous tenant.

The previous tenant did kitchen remodeling. The canoe is a common method of transportation in southern India.

Sorry you couldn't make it, Brian! We had a small but friendly group - Mary and I and Mary Anne were joined by Bill V and Suzi B and her son Edward. We loaded up on the buffet and were happy with the extras that they bring out - masala dosa, a surprisingly good buttermilk/yogurt drink. The owner gave us a good talk, explained a lot about the restaurant (DakShin means "Southern," and the original plan was to have all Southern Indian fare, but he later decided to try to offer the city's widest selection of Indian regional cuisine, with dishes from North and South and at least one item I think he said, from every Indian state. A lot of the interesting dishes, though, are from around Chennai (formerly Madras) at the southern tip of India, and there are all sorts of items - many vegetarian, but also meatful - that I've never seen offered in Louisville before.

As someone said, the canoe and log cabin treatment, although they give it the look of a barbecue joint, were atually all put in by DakShin. He said canoeing is big in Southern India and that there's a famous annual canoe race there.

They also have an outdoor wagon (open only evenings after 5 p.m.) where you can but "chaat," an Indian street food specialty that's sort of like tapas - small plates, mostly selling for $2 to $4. I need to go back for that, and it occurs to me that on a Friday or Saturday night, a stroll from DakShin to Las Gorditas for Indian AND Mexican street food would be an experience that most of us never expected to find in Louisville.
