Great story.
Speaking of weed...
Hemp is used in so many products, I'm wondering if it has ever been brewed into beer or made into a liquor. anyone have any insight into this?

I've had a hemp beer before, back in the early 90's, strangely enough while on Dead tour... 8)

http://www.hempbeer.com/ has a pretty complete list, but I don't see the brand I drank. Likely they aren't producing it anymore - it seemed like a gimmick to sell below-average craft beer. Tasted OK, but I wouldn't buy a sixxer of it.

Edit: just found a KY brewer with a hemp beer, but they also appear to be closed - http://beerme.com/brewery.php?5299

I have a friend in Vancouver that was trying to market "Hemp Dew"...Pepsi asked them nicely to change the name. She has yet to try to get it back out there....But, Vancouver is a great place to market it!

Rock on Weed, California! I drove through there a few years ago and got a little giggle out of the name...

In the early 90's the forerunner to Alltech brewed Kentucky Hemp Beer in Lexington, with the slogan "The Best Beer in the Joint" - I still have a couple of t-shirts from it's debut. Pretty good stuff. I have no idea what happened to them.

Apollo brewed a hemp ale about the same time, very stout and strong, not much my taste.

And there was Hempen Ale, from Frederick Brewing. It was quite good, but I haven't seen it around in quite some time either, so it may have fallen by the wayside. I did find this recipe online from the guy who developed it, for the curious or homebrewer - http://byo.com/recipe/1334.html

I had a taste of a beer while in Milwaukee for the Great Taste of the Midwest that was "dry-hemped" instead of dry-hopped. It was not the best taste in the world, but was unique and made me hungry. It was definately an under the table beer from the brewer's private stash.
