I've been a few times in the past year. Service has always been a bit spotty (sometimes it's great, sometimes, it'll take 10 minutes to place a drink order). Food has always been very good. The value is terrific. Entrees are served with a dizzying array of kimchi, including the traditional fermented cabbage and plenty of others. The kimchi is probably my favorite part. One definitely experiences some novel flavor juxtapositions with kimchi.
I'd also recommend Koreana II. In two recent visits, the service and food have been great. I typically go for the bi bim bop (sp?), but just as with Lee's, I'm really there for the kimchi.
I think westerners tend to overlook Korean cuisine as it does seem a bit more foreign than other eastern cuisines such as American Chinese, Japanese and even the French-influenced Vietnamese cuisine that has become so popular. Do go to Lee's and Koreana though. Try all of the kimchi. It's delicious. And practically free. In fact, it is free (the kimchi at least). Try the bi bim bop served in the hot, earthen bowl and topped with a fried egg. It's a comfort food tour de force. Savor the layers and textures of beef, greens, carrots and radish. And delight in the crusty, caramelized layer of rice that adheres shell-like to the bottom of the hot bowl.
Beyond all of this, these are family-run restaurants and, while not always efficient, the service is always friendly and enthusiastic. Moreso than most restaurants, these approximate dining as a welcome guest at person's home (albeit strangely decorated and located homes with interior affectations from the 60's and 70's).
