I loved Zetti's! I always ordered spaghetti with red pepper flakes and sun dried tomatoes. I could never understand how they could use so many sun dried tomatoes and make money. hmm . . .

I remember Zetti's so well, such a shame it's gone.

Not so long ago, but I miss Kim's Asian Grill dearly. My girlfriend and I had one of first dates there.

The two I recall between North China and the current occupant of 1285 Bardstown Road, Kashmir, were Burkhart's and Lagniappe. Neither lasted long, in fact C-J critic S.R. in her review of Burkhart's dubbed some dish 'inedible'. I'd never seen that adjective in a restaurant review before. Didn't remember the Lebanese place, we moved into the neighborhood in 1986 so maybe it was before our time there.

I didn't remember that there were any occupants between North China and Kashmir, but that could possibly have been when we were away - we blew out of town post-Gannett and lived in NYC for about four years - early 1990 through 1993, came back home just in time for Christmas that year. I *think* SR took over from Ronni Lundy toward the end of that period.

As for the Lebanese place, that would have been much earlier. As a trivia point, I wrote my "audition" review for The Louisville Times there - I was good friends with a Lebanese-American reporter then, and took her on the review visit so I could have an ethnic guide. That would have been around, mmm ... '82 or '83, maybe. My first "real" review was at The Winery on Bardstown, the only serious wine bar Louisville had ever had until L&N came along. The guys there all knew me, so I went in for a review dinner before my assignment was announced. I loved that place, hated to see it close.

Mama's

by Chris M » Thu Apr 19, 2007 3:51 pm

My family had many a wonderful meal at Mama Grisanti's. It was my favorite place to eat growing up.

I was also big fan of Pizza Arcade (which later became Chico's) mostly for the arcade, but also for the Pizza.

I also loved a fairly poor, but wonderfully fun place called Applegate's Landing off Hurstbourne Lane.

I can still sing the jingle if you put a few drinks in me.....

How many drinks will it take to get you not to? ;)

Does anyone remember Farrell's (sp?) at either the Mall St. Matthews (used to be just "the mall") or Oxmoor - I can't remember which. I'm thinking Oxmoor though. It was carnival-themed ice cream place and they served the biggest sundaes I had ever seen. I remember it being dark and wood-paneled with stained glass windows and big booths. It was obnoxiously loud, and my parents hated taking me and my sister there.

Some others of my youth: Druthers (hamburger place I think) and Delights (which had awesome chicken sandwiches.) Both were in St. Matthews where I grew up.

I think the first "chipwich" I ever had was from Fresher Cooker. We'd have Benedictines with bacon and sprouts and leave with green balloons that we carried to the Children's Palace. It makes me sad remembering those carefree summer days when I was young and the world was so much nicer. :(

They were the BEST. I was on the 2nd level of Oxmoor. I cried when they left.

Here's a link for you. Enjoy. :D

On the Sunnyside.....

by Dan Thomas » Thu May 17, 2007 12:44 am

Having been reared in Southern Indiana, These are my "Top 10" places I can remember on the Sunnyside...

10. Tommy Lancaster's on Grantline Rd(It's now the Admin. offices for NA/FC Schools)Their attempt at a fine dining/banquet hall to compete with Masterson's
9. Frank's Steakhouse, Lawry's Seasoned Salt on a baked potato..need I say more?
8. Southside Inn, Where else could you pick out dessert first?(I hope someone can bring back this institution)
7. The old Dairy Queen on Corydon Pike... Not what they have now but a true drive up ice-cream stand(real Banana Milkshakes!)We still have the Polly Freeze however
6. Little Chef...It's still there, but I have to admit I haven't been there in over 20 years
5. Mr Don's...Kinda like Denny's, but more homestlye. It seemed like I knew everyone every time we ate there(which was often)
4.The Boston Seafood Market...It became another buffet called Duff's and is now a medical buliding(10th Street in Jeff)...I recall ordering food off a chalkboard all you can eat and being served at the table(Beer Battered Bass)
3. Papa John's..Well, I worked there at the beginning and can honestly say, It was some of the best pizza I've ever eaten...The corporate thing has bastardized it but at the time it was very fine.
2. A&W on 10th Street in Jeffersonville(Rally's is there now) Another long lost drive up/car hop place (Frosty Mugs Rule!)
1. Clarksville Seafood..Wow! This place is still there and hasn't changed a bit as far as I can remember. They even still have the strangest hours. If you grew up in Clarksville(as I did) they seem ingrained in your brain.

I ponder on this as I prepare to move back to Louisville. I know in my heart that other fond memories are there to be made. Thanks to the efforts of people like Mr. Clancy, Mr. Baylor, Mr. Landin and others, Southern Indiana is a destination to be proud of. It's time to shake off the ugly stepsister syndrome. Keep up the good work and keep making people envious that they have to "cross the bridge" to sample something they can't have on the "other" side of the Ohio!

Having also grown up on the Sunnyside, I have fond memories of the
Country Cottage. It was located where Ann's on the River is now. My
aunt would take my sister and I there on Sunday after church and I
would get these incredible daniishes that came from Krall's Bakery
(another childhood favorite) right down the street. They would take
either chocolate or caramel danishes and split them through the middle,
butter both sides and put them on the hot griddle for just a minute, then
put them back together with another pat of butter in the middle and serve
it on a plate just as the generous icing began to ooze down the sides.
Those were the days!

I have fond memories of the delicious, not to mention "LOUD" sit down meals at Camp Piomingo...Nowadays, when I visit Otter Creek Park, I sometimes can still hear the dinner bells ringing when I am out on the trails...

I also remember going to Ehrler's for ice cream...I loved the Rainbow Sherbet and Pineapple Sherbet of Ehrler's Dairy...Are there any Ehrler's Ice Cream Parlours still around?...I notice that they still sell Ehrler's ice cream at Freedom Hall...Speaking of Ice Cream...Anybody remember the Ice Cream trucks from back in the day that served the soft serve ice cream?...They would make sundaes, double cones, and even banana splits...O' Yeah...Those were the days...

Having grown up in a different state (California, so a very different state) I have different memories.

* Love's ("When you're in Love's, the whole world's delicious"; now down to 3 locations, 2 in California and 1 in Jakarta, Indonesia (?!)) and Chris and Pitts Barbecue ("Home of the Live Wood Fire"). Love's was a family-style restaurant, and we went there more than Chris and Pitts even though C&P was much better. C&P was lit solely by red light bulbs and had spitty sawdust on the floor.

* Jax Chinese and, later, the Mandarin Palace. The start of a lifelong love of asian cuisine.

* The South Street Deli, a Jewish deli and restaurant. I always got kippers and eggs for breakfast, and my cat loved me extra much when I got home.

* Bob's Big Boy. It's Bob's, dammit, Bob's I tell you! Lawry's Seasoned Salt and tartar sauce on a cheeseburger... strawberry pie... mmm mmm.

* IHOP, back when it was a place you went when you wanted pancakes and maybe some eggs or bacon on the side, but mostly pancakes. There were six flavors of syrup on the table.

* We ate at Norm's so often that we had a usual table. (I see that Norm's has officially ditched their apostrophe.)

Camp Piomingo rocked! Yes, the food was very good, and there was lots of it too! I remember Ehrler's also. I actually went to elementary school with Mike Ehrler's son. I remember his balloon in the race as well, and that he seemed to win every year. I don't think it is around anymore, but I looked in the phone book and saw one at 401 Maclean (corner of Strawberry, just west of the airport). Anyone know if that is legit?

Ehrlers! That was my older sister's first job. I remember, at Christmastime, they would often have a little open house & they made the best punch ever (which I know contained their wonderful sherbet.)

They also had an orange-cream freeze called an "Orange Cow" that was scrumptious. One was in St. Matthews where Graeters is now, and another was in Middletown, maybe where Highland Cleaners is (on Shelbyville Rd)? That Highlands also used to be a Little Ceasers and my mom would sometimes get me Crazy Bread on my way home from school. (I grew up in St. Matthews but we moved to Anchorage in 1989. My parents still live there. )

Another moldy-oldie I thought of last night: When pizzas became big(ger) in Louisville in the early 80s, everyone was trying to keep up. I remember a video store in St. Matthews that briefly sold pizzas - they would cook it while you browsed the movies! I think it may have been Roadrunner, but there were some even lesser-knows & it may have been one of those. This particular place was where that gigantic Republic is now I believe - @ Shelbyville & Browns Lane i think...

Even worse was "PTV" or "Pizza-to-Video." We never went there, but it was a drive-thru pizza and video store that was in an old Fotomat kiosk.

In the 80's we ate pizza at Paquales or Mr. Gatti's. I didn't know Papa John was around then.
