You just might be right Mr Garr re: Formerly Myra's. I couldn't swear to the real name.
Does anybody remember a great little Italian restaurant in Buchel on the site where White Castle is now? I remember getting spagetti and meatballs for carry out in aluminum foil lined boxes. The smell was devine. Then there was Fanelli's icecream fountain just down the road on the Buchel by pass. Fantastic home made icecream.

Joe Z's, I believe? We rarely went out that way, having a plethora of pizzerie in the Highlands.

I could be off on this because it wasn't really my stomping grounds, but I thought Fanelli's was a long-time tradition in Fern Creek, a bit farther out the road from Buechel.

Thank you thank you I was going nuts trying to remmber Joe Z's! That's the place. I grew up in FC and I'm pretty sure the local was there on the outside edge of Buchel, just where Bardstown Rd made it's fork.

I remember that! I wasn't raised here, obviously, but when I lived in the Highlands on Douglass, I felt incredibly blessed. I could walk to Lotsa Pasta, Highland Seafood, that little butcher shop that I absolutely loved and the vegetable stand in the Loop. Not to mention Twig and Leaf, Gib's, and Dundee Tavern, where I could get a wonderful steak sandwich for like $6. What more could you want?

And when I first moved here, I lived on Bonnycastle, and I remember my Dad thought I should've moved into an apartment complex until they came to visit. We walked up to Parisian Pantry for lunch (when they were still good), Lentini's for dinner one night, and Uptown for dinner the next. They loved all the food, and he decided I had made the right decision! :D

Hi, first post, nice to meet cha!

I remember a restaurant that totally fascinated me as a kid, I think it used to be on a corner of the old Bashford Manor Mall, before the Chi-Chi's took over, it had real simple signage out front, white on brown ( I think). They had all kinds of stuff hanging on the inside (which was rare then). I would always get a Roy Rogers, I think it was the first place I ever had fried mushrooms. I'm thinking this is around 1975 to 82. Does Anyone remember this place?

Also have fond memories of Mr. Gatti's, and Pizza Hut used to rock back in the 80's when they had servers, Pasquale's Pizza was the sponsor for our baseball team and that was my favorite pizza. Man, that was good stuff.

I remember having my first taste of mexican food at the Taco Tico in Buechel. The y were 17 cents and the most exotic thing I had ever seen.

First chef training instructor in the city at JCC (1975) , chef Harvey and Linda Colgin. They had La Cuisiniere on BardstownRd. They'd open the kitchen late at night or at brunch and you'd just stroll through there filling your plate for one price. It was awesome.

A fav childhood memory was the Luau room at the airport. I always chose that for birthdays. I'll never forget one year when my Mom had two "umbrella drinks" and lost my dad's keys. She was out in the lobby and just dumped her whole purse out upside down, lol...lipsticks, money, etc was rolling down the steps and she was laughing her head off....my Dad wasn't...

Yes! How could I have forgotten! I loved that place ... in fact, my bride and I had our first date there. :) That location then became a "haunted restaurant" for a while. I remember a nice little Lebanese place that didn't last long, a couple of others, then North China and now Kashmir.

Parisian Pantry was great, too, in the early going.

Ho Kow

by Dan Thomas » Mon Apr 16, 2007 2:28 am

Wow, after reading all of these posts I started thinking about some of my own food memories. It's funny to realize that some of what I have tasted in the past, I don't ever think I'll taste again. For example, My first real experience with "Oriental" food was at Ho Kow in Middletown. My parents took me and my brothers there for some occasion that escapes my now(I think I was about 11 years old). But I have very vivid and fond memories of the lazy susan full of food and trying everything. But nothing compared to the War Su Gai. I distinctly remember my father ordering a double portion of that wonderful dish. For years I have sought out any thing that might even be close and haven't found it yet.
For my 16th Birthday my parents took me to Benihana's. Even with the flurry of the teppenaki chef, the best part of the meal I still to this day remember was the ginger salad dressing and what it tasted like. It seems a shame that those places that hold a special place in my heart are gone now.

Dan, I feel like a dinosaur compared to you. I remember Hoe Kow when it was at Bowman Field, lol, and we'd get a root beer next door and watch the planes...

Pasquales Pizza where Avalon is now was a great place to walk to and then a movie at the Uptown. Pasquales had a wonderful juke box.

Memories

by TanyaD » Wed Apr 18, 2007 3:47 pm

We rarely ever ate fast food while I was growing up, so of course, my best memories are of Burger Chef (best prizes with kids' meals!), Red Barn (best sundaes with sprinkes!), and that pizza place that was on Shelbyville Rd. in Middletown where I think Rumors is now (it was next door to Putt-Putt)--maybe Pasquale's? My swim team used to go there after we won a meet. Also, there was a locally-owned restaurant in Muldraugh that had a Tijuana Burger--sloppy as all get out, but sooooo good!

Anyone remember Spazetti's, later called Zetti's? I always liked that. They had a variety of sauces and they were quite tasty. I also remember a decadent chocolate cake served warm.
