Persimmons?

by Barb Freda » Thu Aug 21, 2008 12:41 pm

Hey, all--sorry to be so quiet, but not making back to KY so much these days (sniff)...but I'm looking for KY help--a food friend, a recipe developer, is desperately seeking whole persimmons to use in a recipe--she needs to do a photo, too. Obviously, they are ripe yet, but can anyone get their hands on some perfectly pretty UNDER-riper persimmons? I know she'd pay shipping, she's that desperate...

Hope you're all well. Food scene in Louisville looking fun...as always.

Have you thought about calling Creation Gardens maybe directly? Just a thought...

How many is she needing? I've got a persimmon tree in my back yard that is loaded right now.

Todd--I am going to put you in touch with her--Her name is Monica Bhide and she's in the DC area...Her email is

If that doesn't work, you can try the Walnut Grove Spring Water / Persimmon Valley Farm in Bloomfield, Indiana. 877-947-9420 or 812-384-9395

I'm not sure if they are actually marketing persimmons yet. But it can't hurt to ask. I don't know them personally but pulled this out of that Home Grown Indiana book I mentioned earlier, so caveat emptor.

I don't think they are marketing them yet; don't think they are ripe--but she desperately needs a few for photos...

Barb,

I've sent her an email asking how she wants to proceed. If anyone else locally is looking for persimmons, this tree puts out a ton, and anyone is more than welcome to them.

I've never had persimmon. Is there anything to compare the taste of it to?

PERSIMMONS!!!! Finally, I get to plug my little town. My home. Mitchell, Indiana... Persimmon capital of Indiana. Mitchell proudly celebrates the glorious persimmon every September. This year it will be Sept. 20-27th. The town has an excess of 2000 in population (around the city anyways). Needless to say it is a tiny and quite charming little festival. It boast many different persimmon related dishes as well as a little gaming area and rides for kids. Not to mention the absolutely decadently delicious persimmon pudding. Memories..... Anyways, go and check it out if only for a few hours. Mitchell is about an hour and a half away. Here is the website for the festival. Best.

:) forgot to mention...there is also a stellar state park in Mitchell. Spring Mill State Park and The Virgil I "Gus" Grissom Museum. Its amazing that such a small town could have sent such a prolific human being into the world. One of the first from the USA space program into outerspace. Its such a great town.

I'm not much of a persimmon expert, Michelle, but I'd generalize by saying that a really ripe persimmon reminds me of a really ripe sweet plum. Do not eat an underripe persimmon. They're incredibly astringent (puckery).

I'm not a big plum fan, so I'd venture to guess that I would probably not be a big persimmon fan. Thanks, Robin!

I have only had persimmons in "persimmon pudding" form years ago, and I remember it being very good but reminiscent of a pumpkin pie flavor profile - probably just using the same basic spices.

Monica Bhide is a cookbook author, if I remember right.

Marsha, that's right...cookbook author, writer of newpaper and magazine articles...good person. I love persimmons..they have this smooth texture...I can't wait to see them in the stores down here..I don't think they grow anywhere around here, but I could be wrong..

I'm going to pass on the Mitchell, IN info to Monica, too--Who knew?

Thanks everyone for all your answers and helpful info...Monica will be grateful. I know how hard it is to try to get things for photo shoots out of season--I once tried to find pumpkins (whole pumpkins) in April.

I didn't.
