BASA - Fantastic !!!!

by Casey J. » Sat Apr 14, 2007 7:07 am

My wife and I dined at BASA (Frankfort Ave) on Friday evening. The food was fantastic and the service was equally great. The atmosphere is modern and has a masculine artsy feel. They have a nice wine list. I ordered a German reisling that was very good. We had the beef short ribs as an appetizer. The flavor was fantastic and there was enough for us both to enjoy. We had the soup of the day, which was a wonderfully unique potato soup. (Mr. Ton, this should be a regular menu item) For an entree, my wife had the salmon special. It was a large portion, wonderfully seasoned, served on an earthy vegetable and vegetable puree mix. (We would both order this if it was available during future vists) I had the Ahi Tuna. It was seared perfect and a very large meaty portion. It was very good. We tried the pear and warm berry compote for a light dessert. It was a perfect compliment to a great meal. Not heavy and very flavorful. The server was very personable and informative, without being over attentive. Few restaurants have their service as organized. The ticket, including tip was $103. This was a great meal and we will be returning very soon.

We got the exact same menu items. Had a bit of trouble with the salmon portions. It was a lot of salmon which by the end of the meal we had already finished everything but the salmon. They could have cut it in half to preserve the continuity of all the flavors in the dish. Good though. Subtle flavors. Tuna was good. I was surprised at the freshness of it. I thought everything was great it just didnt leave anything with me. I guess I want to be dazzled everytime I go out. I had more of a "been there done that" perception of their food.

So your complaint is that the portion was too big? That is the sort of problem I can deal with.

I can understand where you are coming from but when it comes to making everything work for taste, even the portion matters. Because you like salmon you are ok with it. A good example of this when people typically dont like it is say for instance MCdonalds. You ask for a chicken sandwich and you get a ridiculous amount of mayo on it. That is not good. Same argument here.

Same argument here. Everything has to be in the right proportions for it to make the dish effective. Just have a piece of fish otherwise. You have to make sure your ingredients are proportioned correctly in baking so why not dishes?
