J-Town Lunch Spots - Need Recommendations

by Anthony U » Fri Aug 15, 2008 10:51 am

Hi -

We just moved our office to the Bluegrass Industrial Park, and I wanted to get your favorite lunch spots that are close to the Park - independent restaurants preferred, of course.... :) Thanks!!
Oh, and what is the verdict on Chubby Ray's?

The closest would be

Passtimes Fish House - Off Watterson Trail between Plantside and Electron

I love the fish sandwich and the J-Town Ribeye

Hero's Pizza! On the old Town Square. Nice people, and in my opinion the best NYC-style pizza in town.

Over in the direction of Stony Brook, Khan's Mongolian (formerly 2 Hahn's) is a pretty good Mongolian grill, reportedly much preferable to the new chain one on Hurstbourne. Also in that general locale, watch for Thai Orchids to replace Sala Thai soon.

Shalimar's in the Shoe Carnival/Liquor Barn shopping center, across from the Sam Swope auto center, has a good, inexpensive lunch buffet.

Good catch. Isn't El Toro over there too? Above average bilingual Mexican-American.

I'm not sure. There is a Feista Mexicana across from LAC with a El Nopal further down the street. Another good place that does not get enough recognition is Maggies. This is a great place stuck out in the middle of J-Town land. Like Cafe Perusa, it should be frequented more often. It's located almost across the street from the ( Is that an antique mall? ). There are several other places in J-town. To be opened soon is the new Thai place in Stoney brook; forgive me for not remembering the name. Don't forget about Homerun Burgers and Fries.

There are various chains along Hurstborne and Taylorsville Rd.

Joe's O.K. Bayou in Plainview
Sichuan Gardens in Plainview (I think they're still there!)
Erika's German Restaurant on Taylorsville Road (not sure if opened for lunch)
"Save the neck for me, Clark!" - Cousin Eddie

I actually work in the park also, and we frequent the following places for lunch :

Hurstbourne Lane :
Home Run Burger & Fries (I'm still 99% sure this place is not a chain)
Shalimar (my favorite lunch spot)
Bristol Bar and Grill
Jason's Deli
Shiraz (my new second favorite lunch spot)

J-town/Taylorsville Road :
Los Aztecas (better than El Toro IMO)
Hero's (I'm not a fan of this place. Slow service, average pizza IMO, but other's like it)

Stoney Brook :
Q'doba
McAlister's Deli
Steak & Shake
Famous Dave's
BW3
Jersey Mike's
White Castle

Plainview :
Joe's OK Bayou
Skyline
Jimmy John's

Middletown / Blankenbaker Rd. :
Mark's Feed Store
Penn Station
Ernesto's (also better than El Toro IMO)

Hope that helps!

I will second Maggies. Pauline, who used to run Dillons, has got a great place there with great food. Wifi and NFL Sunday ticket too. It's right where Grand meets Taylorsville Rd.

Heroes is great pizza too.

Maggie's is a great great spot....there are TV's everywhere, they are doing the Sunday NFL ticket, they have free WiFi, they also have a "real" Chef working there. The food is very good quality and reasonably priced for both lunch and dinner. Besides that they are locally owned, they are a real jewel in J-Town....their daily specials are really great.....go to Maggie's you are missing out.

Great suggestions - thanks everyone - I look forward to trying them all. Funny - not a single comment on Chubby Ray's Pizza Company....

Meaning no disrespect to Chubby Ray, if I'm in J'town with a hankering for pizza, I can't see passing by either Hero's or Slice of NY in favor of a Louisville-style pizzeria.
