Clay Street really goes live for Aug. 23 VOLKSFEST

by Robin Garr » Mon Aug 11, 2008 9:36 am

Just got a PR note on this ... Dave and Roger and others, I'm surprised you haven't been beating the drums! This sounds awesome ...

"VOLKSFEST" 2008
Saturday, Aug. 23
2 p.m. - Midnight

Presented by BBC and The Taprooom, New Albanian Brewing Company and O'Shea's

Saturday, Aug. 23, two great breweries of Kentuckiana come together to present a fest of the people - "VOLKSFEST" 2008! Festivities are from 2 p.m. - midnight and will include German food, a German theme movie plus The Red Hot Rascal Bavarian Experience and live local rock n roll!

BBC & New Albanian Brewing Company will be blocking off Clay Street between East Market & Main and will be spicing up a usual sleepy Saturday downtown scene. This event is Open to the Public and is FREE with proceeds from food and beer to benefit Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, St. Vincent DePaul Society and Louisville Film Society Educational Arm.

Drink, Drink Bier ... beers to be served will include a strong line-up of October Fests brews, and other special craft beers hand-selected by Louisville's "godfather of beer" Roger Baylor himself. Food will be prepared and served by local favorites, O'Shea's, Monkey Wrench and Café Lou Lou featuring: Dogs, Brats, Kraut, German Potato Salad and Big Soft Pretzels.

The "VOLKSFEST" will also feature a movie awards ceremony hosted by

48 Hours Film Project, which, will take place at dusk and will be followed by a dual screen showing of the German classic-"Das Boot" presented by Louisville Film Society. German entertainment will be from

2p-4p and then local bands will take the stage to keep the evening rockin'.

All ages are welcomed so everyone will want to be Downtown for a fest of the people - VOLKSFEST 2008!

Doesn't "Brew at the Zoo" also fall on August 23rd this year?

Roger has been out of town and I have been busy with a 3400 case order for Beer Across America. We'll post more information as the band & beer list shapes up.

Excellent, keep the facts coming in as you get them!

Hey, I used to belong to that club, and they were great! But in the late '90s, Kentucky's stupid laws made them quit shipping to us. Have they gotten over that?

They quit shipping to KY whenever that law was enacted. I received their first fifty months of shipments prior to the change. I know a guy that has been receiving his (lives in the Highlands) for over a year now. We've been shipping to BAA once a year for the last five years.

Volks Fest:
The plan is to have two five tap beer trailers; one with just Oktoberfests and the other with Roger's selections of craft brewed beers. All the taps in the Tap Room will be flowing as well.

Breakout the lederhosen and drindl!

I may be mistaken but I'm fairly sure neither of us own either. I would love some lederhosen but can't afford the real deal.

Indeed, I've been on holiday, and sorry to be coming late to the thread. I hope to have a beer list firmed up Friday morning, and will let you know ASAP.

Here's what I know so far.

My objective as beer buyer has been to ensure representation for micro/craft beer as a whole (i.e., no imports), and to have all local breweries represented, seeing as we'd all like for this to be a springboard of sorts for a local microbrewers guild, something that some of the Louisville breweries have been working on for quite some time.

I'm trying to balance styles across the board so attending beer drinkers have a real choice of flavors and strengths. It isn't intended as a sampling. The beers will be sold for a reasonable price by the cup.

Thanks to BBC and River City distributing. We've had little time to organize, and we hope it will be the sort of thing that can grow in years to come, so I'll apologize up front for glitches. We promise to learn from them.

INSIDE THE BBC TAPROOM
All current BBC draft selections

OKTOBERFEST TRAILER
BBC-Main & Clay Oktoberfest
Hofbrauhaus (Newport) Oktoberfest
Schlafly Oktoberfest
Great Lakes Oktoberfest
Brooklyn Brewery Oktoberfest

MICROBREW TRAILER
BBC-St. Matthews TBA
Browning’s TBA
Cumberland TBA
NABC TBA
NABC TBA
Upland TBA
One other, also TBA ... I'm working on it.

More later. The beer list is Job One for me today.
Thanks to BBC's Scott Roussell for Oktoberfest beer availability research.

Kind of disturbed. Volksfest sounds like a great time as well as being a great deal. However, as a beer lover, I'm kinda disturbed that it was planned at the same time as Brew at the Zoo. Don't get me wrong, I'm gracious that this option is available. But I love events like this and Brew at the Zoo. They are good for whatever organization they are supporting and they provide an outlet for educating the public about craftbeer. So I wonder why would this event be planned to clash with the zoo event? I love the zoo and I go out of my way to support it, we are lucky to have one here. But I also go out of my way to support Louisville's ever growing and evolving craftbeer community. Volksfest seems like it may be a fairly big event, why would it be planned to clash with Brew at the Zoo? I'm sure there are a ton of people that have already invested in tickets for Brew at the Zoo, its too bad they have to decide which event to attend. This may have been unintentional, but it just seems to be done in poor taste.

Not trying to offend anyone, I just wish that this may have been considered when planning this event.
