If i ever see trifle on the menu, i steer far clear.
It's hard to mess up, because It's a bunch of old crumbs and misc/ odds and ends re-used and made into a "presentable" dish.

It's literally the classic representation of the garde manger function relayed to pastry.

From a professional standpoint...
Never, ever order a trifle at a restaurant people.
(and question places that serve them)

You have been warned.

My bad, I was kinda talking about desserts one makes, not buys. We are in the restaurant forum and not the kitchen forum...

Michelle,
Funny you should mention Apple Crisp from Mom, my mom used to make it all the time!

I wanted to share that with our guests at Meridian, so I made a PEACH crisp yesterday. Warmed with vanilla bean ice cream.
The best, delish, and not to mention the memories!

Summer desserts from David Lebovitz

by David R. Pierce » Tue Aug 12, 2008 1:25 pm

Here's a nice article from David Lebovitz in the LA Times. Three easy, new summer desserts.

I apologize for my first post on this forum being in regard to such an old post. I've been lurking and my mind's been dwelling on this post for a while now (it's been haunting my sleep!), so it's about time I join!

I beg to differ, Ethan. With all due respect, you may have simply not had a well crafted trifle! One can't just toss some old crumbs and leftovers into a bowl and call it "dessert". The layers have to be cohesive, but complimentary, some rich, some creamy. I'd like to invite you to come to Sweet Surrender and try something I take a lot of pride in - my mocha trifle. I've been making this bowl of goodness for over a year now, and I'd hate to think my trifle's reputation is on the line! I'll be making one Thursday, but the servings go quick! But Ethan, I've got one serving with your name on it.

From my professional standpoint, as well as Ethan's, never, ever order a trifle from a restaurant.
From my professional standpoint, instead, order a trifle at a dessert cafe.

Oh yum, peach crisp! I might have to beg my mom to make some apple crisp before they head back to FL for a month or two. I've tried to make it myself, but it's never as good! I'll ask her to throw on some extra crisp! That's the best part!

If you are a banana fan, try the Mt. Caramel Banana Cream Pie at Napa River Grill. I enjoyed this dessert last Thursday at the restaurant. No, it is not a traditional pie, but a play on pie. Just incredibly delicious!

I grew up with my Grandma's Oatmeal Crinkle (a midwest version of Apple Crinkle). Sometimes it acts as an ultimate comfort food for me..My favorite part is the crispy chewy part on the bottom (not the crunchy crisp on top)...

Also, I make a Triple Berry pie (raspberry, blackberry and blueberry) with a double crust, when berries are in season. A very good friend of mine's husband proclaimed it "the best thing I've ever put in my mouth".

The following from Corbett's is the best fruit desert I've had this summer:

Sunnyside Farms Peach Strudel
Sweet Corn Panna Cotta
Peaches and Cream Terrine
Roasted Peach Sauce

Sweet corn Panna Cotta? That sounds delish....
Peaches and Cream Terrine, sounds like a whole lot of fun to make! I love a good terrine challenge!
