Butchers Best: Prospect is getting a butcher shop

by Ed Vermillion » Fri Aug 08, 2008 9:41 pm

After a very good meal at Blackstone Grill tonight (more on that later) we noticed that a butcher shop is going into the former space of Pig & a Peppermint in the Prospect Point shopping center. The name above the door: Butchers Best Meats and Deli. One of the two owners listed on the card in the window has the last name of Best, James Best if memory serves. Wondering if it could be an offshoot of the Mike Bests Meats. Looks like work is just getting started inside, but we are looking forward to having a butcher shop down in Prospect. Thanks to Amy BK for the tip!

I wonder if that would be the "Best" meat shop on Westport Rd. before the expansion. If so, very glad to see it hang in there and prosper. I could be incorrect. If anyone knows, what was the name of the butcher on Westport by Camelot? I grew up out that way and the expansion of Westport Rd. along with the interchange with the Watterson has totally changed that area.
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.

That is the same Mike Bests Meats that was on Westport Road, Doogy. We used to head there at lunch during High School and get outstanding sandwiches (which they still do). They moved to their current location at Brownsboro Rd and I-264 from Westport Road. They have been planning/working that Westport Road expansion for decades.

I lived in the area during the 60's and 70's. Swam for Plantation Swim Club. We even sent a member to the 1968 Olympics. Susie Shields. She was the original butterfly queen. Won a bronze in Mexico City. Attended Mother of Good Counsel. First job at IHOP. The "original" in the Ville. I love that portion of my life. Love the memories. Anyone else traipse through Goose Creek or know about the cave?

She was my swimming teacher at Plantation!

Growing up we use to explore around Goose Creek and the woods around Spring Valley. Anyone else know about Mushroom Rock? But I was not aware of a cave. Where is that located?

WOW! Pure speculation here (will confirm today though) but me thinks this shop will be run by Jimmy (we were cutters together at Whole Foods) and he is the best in town, bar none!!. I hope this is the case as there is not a nicer man on the planet!

Oh, do I know Mushroom Rock....I better plead the 5th right here and now..glad that old rock can't talk! It used to be on the property of a dear friend and we'd take her Dad's ancient Willey's Jeep back to Mushroom Rock. The old seminary property was great fun to roam. Ed's right - Mike Best got alot of our lunch money way back when with great sandwiches. Haven't gotten any sandwiches in eons, but He has a good selection of homemade sausages that we indulge in from time to time.

I had Lunch to day with Shane Best of Pappy's White Lighting BBQ sauce fame and also the brother of Mike Best and he tells me that it is not his family that is opening the butcher shop.

Ed- I just confermed that it is, indeed, Jimmy (ex of Whole Foods/Fresh Market Etc.) who will be heading up this venture with two partners. Prospect will be quite fortunate as Jimmy is the balm!!
