CJ gives props to Bistro 301

by Robin Garr » Sat Aug 02, 2008 9:32 am

Marty brings forth a short (513-word) but very positive review today of Bistro 301, which he probably wisely alludes to as "formerly known as Deke's Marketplace Grill" although I believe the name change is more than a year old now.

I have to say that Bistro 301 hasn't earned much of a reputation - at least in this forum - as a dinner spot, although it seems popular for lunch. Based on Marty's review, which reads a good half-star better than the 3-star rating he bestows, it might be worth a try. What say you, forumites? Is Marty on target?

I've had a dinner and a lunch there within in the past six months or so. The dinner was pleasantly surprising, while the lunch was a below-average salad. I've never been much of a fan of this place (including under its previous moniker), especially when one can just walk another block or so to Saffron's.

I think that Matt has really turned this location around and made it a viable dining spot in the downtown area. It is certainly an improvement over some other dining suggestions that have previously been mentioned in this forum. It has a full array of choices and it certainly gets the food to you in a very timely manner, especially if you are on a rigid schedule. Everyone thinks about 301 Bistro for lunch, but it's a great suggestion for dinner also. Nice job Matt.

Thanks for the testimony, David (and TP, too). Sounds like I ought to move it higher up on my list!

I've had a late lunch and a dinner there in the last month, and both were very good. The blackened fish sandwich was very tasty, and the pork chop I had for dinner was as good as any I've had in this town. I was also pleasantly surprised by their beer list, which is very well thought out, and features a number of excellent craft beers.

It's most certainly worth checking out.

We eat lunch there at least once a week and dinner quite often too. It's my favorite place within walking distance to our office. They have a great chicken salad and their club is my husbands favorite sandwich in town.

While we have only been once, my wife and I enjoyed ourselves.

This is our favorite place to go before Actor's Theatre . . . it's on the same block, with good food at a great price! You can get anything from sandwiches to salads to truly gourmet dinners - a perfect "bistro" American-style. I agree with the three-star rating.

My DH and I have had lunch there one time, about one year ago. While the fish sandwich was forgettable, we did really enjoy the pasta special. Unfortunately, we were treated extremely rudely by a man whom I believe is the owner, and we have had NO desire to return. I have never been talked to so rudely by someone who was taking my money before in my life. It was a little busy, but it was getting close to 1 PM and the lunch business was fizzling. He made no attempt to apologize and it was obvious that we were offended. Even the hostess was shocked by the way we were spoken to. I have posted regarding this experience before, and hopefully by now, they have ironed out the kinks and they can run a busy restaurant with a smile.

I am encouraged by the positive remarks, but still shy to return.
