Sala Thai - the rest of the story

by Robin Garr » Thu Jul 24, 2008 9:43 am

In another thread, Dan Thomas reports:

I'm sorry to report that Sala Thai will be closing theer doors this week.

I got some carry out Monday and was informed of it by the owners daughter.

This is horrible news ... DAMN the Bush Recession!

And the usual reminder: As long as you still have an extra dollar to spare, spend it in one of our great indie restaurants! If we can't keep Louisville's great local dining scene alive through economic hard times, we'll look up in a couple of years and find that we've turned into Joplin, Missouri, as far as local dining goes.

They are closing for 2 weeks to remodel. That is what our server told us 2 weeks ago at the end of dinner.

I am kind of a big deal.

Whoa ... call that rumor back into the stable!

We'll check this out with the management and try to get a final word.

DCE loves some Sala Thai... even thought I can only rarely make it there for a bite to eat...

Okay, Paul at Food & Dining has talked to Sala Thai management, and this appears to be the story:

* Sala Thai is indeed closing, BUT ...

* They've sold to new management, which will do some remodeling and reopen in about two weeks as Thai Orchid.

Bottom line, if this pans out, we'll still be able to get our Stony Brook Thai fix. And if we're lucky, it will be just as good.

Free beer to the first forumite who gets out to the new place and check it out. :)

If the new owners are the same as that of Thai Orchid in Lexington, there is nothing to fear.

Here's to hoping... Sala Thai was one of my wife and my favorite places to eat for a quick, good sit-down. And I'll take you up on that offer of free beer -- going to have to stop every night for the next two weeks

I designed two restaurants for a lovely young lady and her husband. She worked there and months ago she told me they were closing and she wanted to replace open a replacement restaurant with called Thai Orchid. I hope the just worked out a deal that works for all involved.

I will give her a call and report back!

Believe me, buddy, even with anecdotal success stories around, anybody who doesn't think we're in a recession and doesn't understand why is simply not paying attention.

And I'll stand by my original advice: Until this is over (and preferably even then), put as many of your dining dollars as you can behind our great local indie restaurants.

Scott, were you the architect on that job?

We ate there tonight, this is the last weekend for sala thai as it was. Just hoping the new place has the same, or better, level of food.

Hahah, I'm not even making the argument that we aren't in a recession. I do, however, find it humorous when something like this is blown out of proportion and is immediately blamed on Bush and 'his' recession.

We find our laughs in different places, Aaron. With numerous local restaurants that ARE closing because of the economy, with the world in a very scary place that's the making of the worst U.S. administration in history, some things deserve to be said over and over and over again.

That said, in fairness I'll welcome a last word if you care to have it, but then let's get back to yakking about good things to eat and drink.
