No subsitutions

Have you ever been out and order off the menu but find yourself switching the the chef concept of an entree to your likeing. For myself it is a pleasure what ever the case may be,we are service and the guest is always right. I'd like to ask the forumites what they think in this topic and if you have been in this position before and the request was refused.............Its a chefs life.

I have never switched the main part of an entree, but I hate brussels sprouts and don't care for french fries. I have asked for something else and never been refused. I guess that changes the concept, but If I was refused that would probably be my last visit.

I have to agree with Steve, there are certain things that I just don't eat and fresh tomatoes happens to be one of them that I truly detest. I have no problem asking for them to be removed from a dish that I'm ordering and if my wishes were not respected I probably wouldn't return to that restaurant. There are several other things I also won't eat like sauerkraut, brussels sprouts and cooked greens but these are normally easier to avoid on a menu.

I know tomatoes are a strange thing not to like but neither my wife or I eat them. We'll eat anything with tomato sauce, salsa, marinara, etc. and even fried green tomatoes, just not fresh sliced tomatoes. We've actually have found a surprising number of people with the same fetish!

I almost always push plain raw tomatoes off my plate, though I've recently learned to like them in bread salad.

I've never liked buttered bread or panckes of any sort and I always have a very hard time convincing kitchens to keep everything dry. Huge lumps of butter seem to be sign of southern hospitality.

Mark I'm the exact same way. I love cooked tomatoes in almost any form but I can't stand raw tomatoes so I ask for them to be removed from everything.

My girlfriend and I had to stop going to LaRosita because of their refusal to remove things from dishes. Every other joint we've dined at has been more than happy to comply.

J.R.... It comes as no surprise that people will try to mess up your well conceived dish...

You can't take it as an insult because people like what they like ; No matter how strange or insipid it might be!!!!

It will only matter if they send a dish back after picking through the menu like they were choosing sides for a pick-up game of B-Ball and didn't like the result...

In that case You still have to "grin and bear it", but you know in the back of your mind that you were right to begin with!!!!

Dietary substitutions are one thing, allergies and the like. Otherwise, I say "Trust Your Chef." If they think olives belong in a dish, and you don't like olives, maybe you order something else. I figure, I am paying someone for their expertise, I should probably defer to that. Just me though.

Only if it contains something I detest would I ask to alter the dish. Otherwise I trust the chef. And the more bizarre the pairing, the bigger the adventure.
