Wow.

It was pretty amusing. My boyfriend had stepped outside to smoke and then ran into someone he knew so I had plenty of time to watch the free entertainment.

The lady who owned Me-Oh-My-Jambalaya on Frankfort used to put curses on her dishwasher on a nightly basis. And I don't mean general explitives, I mean good old-fashion voodoo curses. Apparently he was a bit of a drinker and was oft late. (I only know this because we used to hear it every night through the paper thin walls while we researsed next door in what used to be the old Artswatch space.

One night I had a lady order a tea with her meal, she then helped herself to the ENTIRE bowl of lemons, took them back to her table and proceeded to eat every single one of them...

On a catering one night I had a (drunk) guy offer me his car if I could "get the damn thing started." We finally got it started, but I got no car... :| His friend drove him home.

more to come as I recall them...

3 odd things when I was Sous Chef at Polo Fields CC:
A coupled complained to management that they would not come to the every Friday fish fry because we served fried fish.
A lady had lunch at the club almost every day, always ordered a house salad and had the wait staff heat the salad in the microwave.
A member came into the kitchen during dinner service on a Sat. night with 4 steaks from his house wanting us to cook them for him.

Once upon a time I worked at Artswatch and that woman was always cursing people! It was entertaining but also a bit freaky sometimes. She cursed a woman that I worked with several times, but she always liked me... I guess I was lucky!

the daughter of one of our regulars loves our cheese pizza, but she pulls all the cheese off and eats the crust with the sauce, never the cheese (we offered to make it without cheese, but she says it just isn't as good (the cheese keeps the sauce and crust moist)

Years ago in front of the old Victoria Station in Dupont, we had an original, full sized English phone booth. One night the hostess came back to the manager's office and said, "Thought you'd like to know, there's a pick up truck out front and 2 guys are trying to load up the booth." Sure enough, middle of a Saturday night, 2 good ole boys tried to steal the phone booth from the front of the restaurant.
And I wish I had a dollar for every time I walked into the cocktail lounge and found folks 'waffle-ing' in the cupola.

I feel I've seen a lot in my years in the BIZZ, but my all time favorite is the person that ordered a quail dish and then sent it back stating "I couldn't possibly be expected to eat that, it looks too much like a little bird."

I love the people that ask if the cod/salmon/flounder/whatever tastes fishy.
No, everything tastes like chicken.

And on a slightly different note, in years past I've taken numerous calls inquiring about our B&B. The most annoying question, which I've heard several times over our 10 years in this biz, is "Is it nice?" In the early years I'd repeat all the amenities we offer and assure them that it was nice. In the last few years as I've grown older, I've also nearly completely lost my ability to suffer fools. My response these days is, "Of course, you realize that you're asking me if my home is nice. Yes, I think my home is nice. Is your home nice?" Nervous laughter usually ensues. Some book, some don't. Overall business is good.

Dining with friends at Bristol (Bardstown Rd) several years ago, we suddenly noticed that the momentum of service at our table had slowed down, and we hadn't seen our server for awhile.....I took it upon myself to stroll back into the kitchen to find out what happened and came upon our server engaged in a bare-knuckle boxing match with one of his colleagues in the middle of the kitchen (some dispute over the Green Chili Won-tons, perhaps)....as I recall, we paid for our drinks and finished dinner somewhere else -- will never forget that....

I don't know, I would have waited around to see who won the fight. If my server lost, I would have left, but if my server won, I'm being served by a winner! :D

I just got back last night from a girls trip to Seaside, Florida. We had one lunch at The Great Southern Cafe (formerly Shades). Our table was on the outside porch, but we could see that there was a chalk board with what appeared to be some specials through the window of the door that led inside the restaurant. Because of the angle & glare, we couldn't actually read the info on the chalk board.

After we had been handed our menus, my friend asked our server about the items on the chalk board and indicated that she couldn't quite read them. Our server replied "Oh, those are our baked oyster specials" We asked if they are served during lunch or if it was only a dinner thing. She told us that they were available anytime and walked off. We all just shrugged and ended up getting up to go inside to look at the specials ourselves. (Yes, we know that it's not an "r" month. Refrigeration has pretty much eliminated that issue) Similar weirdness when I tried to get a wine list.

When the going gets weird, the weird go get the menu themselves.......especially if there's wine & oysters involved.
