No Tap Water at a Restaurant?

by SheilaB » Thu Jul 03, 2008 2:48 pm

So, I was craving pizza for lunch today and went over to Luigi's on Main St. I'm not a frequent diner - I probably go in once every three or four months. I asked for a glass of tap water to go with my lunch and I was told they only have bottled water. I asked someone else if it was possible to get a glass of water to go with my lunch and told no I had to order bottled water. I'm trying to cut down on my bottled water as it is an environmentally unfriendly practice. My only other choice was to get a soda (or soda water) which I didn't really want. While Luigi's is counter service (not a sit down restaurant) it does seem to have a full kitchen where they prepare food. They also have paper cups for the soda fountain (and I've never balked at ponying up a few cents to cover the cost of a paper cup).

So, I'm just doing a gut check here - am I crazy to be incredibly annoyed by this? Is this a common practice?

I love the food at Luigi's, but find the owner rude. I went in with 3 young children. I ordered a pizza and 2 sodas. I asked for 2 cups for water and was told to buy bottled water. I bought the bottles and asked for cups for the children to drink out of. He seemed very annoyed by this request. On a seperate visit, my husband ordered some of their pickled eggplant (that is in their salads) as an order to go. The worler behind the counter put some in a container which was about $5.00, and when Luigi walked over and saw how many eggplants were in the container said it was too much and proceeded to take out some and then hand it to my husband.

I have dealt with 'water snobs' before, they are the ones who don't like that you aren't shelling out for their overpriced beverages. I only drink water when I eat out, as does my wife. No alcohol because we have no place for that stuff in our lives, and I like the money I save each and every time. Makes me more inclined to order an App or Dessert also. And it's healthier. Could care less if its 'green' or whatnot.
Liberalism is a 'no brainer'.
