LEO/LHB: Corbett's joins the region's top tables

by Robin Garr » Thu Jul 03, 2008 7:38 am

LEO's Eats with Louisville HotBytes.com

Chef Dean Corbett, who made his mark on the Louisville food scene with his excellent restaurant Equus in St. Matthews, has created one of the most outstanding restaurants in the region with this latest venture. Corbett's "An American Place" opened in the winter in the far-east end of Jefferson County, in the growing Brownsboro Crossing shopping center east of the Snyder Freeway. It has already joined the ranks of the region's top tables.

Housed in the 150-year-old farmhouse that was originally home to the Von Allmen dairy operation, Corbett's has been renovated from cellar to ceiling, the gracious lines of a prosperous country estate now girded with every high-tech restaurant bell and whistle imaginable, from special air-conditioning for the comfort of chefs on the hot stations to a 21st century television system that allows, among other things, guests in the private "chef's room" to interact with kitchen staff while their dinner is being prepared ($150 per person) and later receive a souvenir DVD recording of the experience.

Although the building is situated smack-dab in front of Costco, which hovers into view long before you reach the restaurant on the drive back from Brownsboro Road, the shopping center sprawl is not visible once you're inside the restaurant or its shady outdoor dining areas. A new patio on the east of the building is cleverly walled off from the Costco view. For those who choose alfresco, misters run in warm weather to cool things off out there on a muggy evening.

Hey, this sounds like it must have been a pretty fabulous experience!

I like the quiet of the basement, but the veranda on a cool evening would be fabulous.

I've had lunch at Corbett's a handful of times and must say if was wonderful each time. They did have a Kobe burger that was quite good with stone ground mustard. One of those days we ate on the front porch and it was about 70 and sunny....great lunch that day.

It might have been...but the last time I was there it had been replaced with a different type of burger, not sure if they change prices for the dinner menu or not. Had the meatloaf one day, it was good as well.

I was actually surprised at how affordable (gasp!) the pricing was. I had expected it to be well out of my modest budget's range, but I can definitely see dining there for a special occasion. As a matter of fact, I'll be looking forward to it!

If it was Kobe-style (most likely it was Texas Wagyu), then $15 would not be at all out of line.

It was the best burger I'd had in recent memory...until Monday...I had the ground Ribeye burger at the new Napa Grill at Westport Village(the hot brown looked good too)...pretty tasty...the Kobe was probably a tad better in the end though.

Robert, I'm guessing that Corbett's and places like it just aren't really right for you.

Does anyone know what their Grande Tasting Menu typically runs? I'm assuming it changes based on what is being served at the time since a price isn't listed on the website. We're planning on doing that for our anniversary dinner this year and was just curious on price range.

I have been there only a couple of times but I must say that my experience was much more enjoyable with a small group. I have been there with a larger group and the experience & food was not up to my expectations. I absolutely LOVE the atmosphere though, especially downstairs near the wine cellar! Troy Ritchie is wonderful too. We have been dining at Equus on a regular basis for a couple of years now & I must say that one of the highlights of the entire experience is having Troy pre-select our wine. We don't even look at the wine list anymore because we know that Troy will have a much better idea of what we will enjoy. The service at Corbett's and Equus is IMO probably the best service of any restaurant we have dined at in the city.

No they are not. I am in the very large goup that spends about 8 to 18 bucks for dinner and around 5 to 8 for lunch. I have a hard time paying 15 dollars for a hamburger...but they are in a good location as there is a lot of money floating around that area.....but with the ecomony the way it is I hope that the high price places to eat are able to make it....because things are not going to get better any time soon...IMO
