CHEAP Eats

by Bill Veneman » Mon Jun 30, 2008 10:05 am

OK, with the economy going to a very warm place in a handbasket, I for one have cut back on going out to eat. That's not saying that I don't dine out anymore, I've just become a bit more conscience of how much I'm spending. I tend not to purchase spirits out, and have lighter fare to lighten the load on the wallet.

That being said, where is your favorite "Cheap Eats" place (chain or not, doesn't matter to me).

El Tarasco is one of mine. Their combo dinners are reasonable, and usually wind up taking some home for lunch the next day.
If life's a Banquet, what's with all the Tofu?

Cheers!

I got some sort of El Tarasco coupons on my receipt from Kroger's yesterday, so maybe that would help as well.

Hey Bill,

Flabby's does a great lunch special everyday with Tuesday being the best with all you can eat wings and taters for $4.95.

Chicken King at Clay & Broadway has a 2 piece Keel (spicy or regular, try the spicy) 3 potato wedges and a roll for $4.79. I can only eat one keel and save the other for a great sandwich the next day.

Juanita's Burger Boy does a fine Double Cheeseburger with fries and slaw for $3.99.

The Cottage Inn used to do an all you can eat fried chicken night for something like $7-$8 but I don't know if that is still an option with the new owners.

Dairy Kastle at Eastern Parkway & Bradley always has a special, with the chili dogs being as good as always.

BoomBozz Pizza & Vino does their great 2 for $20 (if I remember correctly) that includes food and wine.

Our personal favorite is Havana Rumba. Still incredibly inexpensive for the sublime food they have.

Almost all of our independents have hidden bargains tucked away on their menus and need our support now more than ever. When you find one let us all know.

I like Taco Bell for cheap eats. A mexican pizza and/or a beef and potato burrito will fill you up for about four bucks. I'm not really sure what kind of beef they use, it doesn't seem like regular hamburger but it's pretty tasty. Anyone ever worked at the bell? How do they make thieir beef?

I think knowing that is one of those mysteries I'd feel better about if left unsolved.

Brian, I used to know someone who worked at Taco Bell and they said (now this is coming from them, not me) that they use oatmeal in the ground beef. For two reasons, one, to bulk up the amount of beef to make it go further and two, the oatmeal also gives it that creaminess. Could be true, could be urban legend.
