Family in town from Wisconsin. Where to dine.

by Doogy R » Sun Jun 29, 2008 9:46 pm

Please offer recommendations. They are all open to all foods, even my 9 year old nephew. In fact, his favorite restaurant back home is Vietnamese. I loves my Blake.

Havana Rumba

Cafe Lou Lou

Science Hill's Sunday brunch

Lynn's (your nephew would love the place)

Sorry, I don't know of any "hidden gems"; these are just a few that immediately came to mind.

I am sure Blake will love breakfast there. Thanks for the suggestion. I like North End Cafe better, but for a 9 year old I like your idea better.

Hey, Doogy. I totally agree with Todd's suggestions. I would suggest breakfast at the counter at Lynn's, if at all possible; I think your nephew would find the orange juicing machine fascinating. If they will be here all week, you can't go wrong with the Sunday brunch at Science Hill, but the food is good all the time. I would add Baxter Station to the mix. I went with my son and grandson for lunch one day last week and I am kicking myself for not going there more often. Payne is a little off my beaten path, but the food was awesome. My son and I split an oyster po' boy and a pasta plate with crawfish and artichokes. Heads up, neither of those show up on the online current online lunch menu, but I can't wait to go back.

Hey Doogy , Vietnam Kitchen is one of best in Louisville. It is a drive off the sunny side of Louisville, though. You can find it in Iroquois Manor. J4 compels me to drink from the bowl and sweat profusely haha.

Havana Rumba is a great suggestion.Palermo Viejo has some of the best meat dishes in town for the price. Seviche is always excellent. Cafe Lou Lou always has something to offer anyone eating as well as Ramsi's Cafe.Third Avenue Cafe for lunch is a winner. They are from Wisconsin and most likely drink decent beer. Rich O's/Sport'stIme is kid friendly and they carry decent beer ,hehe.

Take a ride out to Smithfield and visit "Our Best" -- country home cookin' so much better than "Cracker Barrel"....

Thanks for all the suggestions. We've been to the Brown and Bonefish Grill so far. I know, a chain. We did have what I would rate as a 3.5 star meal at Bonefish. The food was great and the service was seriously off the chart. Bonefish is very committed to taking very good care of their patrons.

So anyone who doesn't like a chain, please go to another thread. I know we'll absolutely visit mostly local places while they are here. Shiraz at Holiday Manor is next on the list and I will steer them towards Gilberto Gilato right after that.

Doogy, if you're headed on Frankfort avenue, don't forget Sweet Surrender for your nephew. I recently took my niece and nephew (6 and 12) and they loved it.

If you eat at Shiraz tomorrow lunch you can head to Whole Foods- Justin Gilberto and his lovely wife set up a gelato stand at the farmer's market in the parking lot. Saves the trip to Norton Commons.

Thanks for the suggestion Gary but I live less than a mile from Norton Common's and my mom's house is close as well. I do know my out of town folks will LOVE Gilberto's. They live in Appleton, WI and most the choices they have are of the chain ilk. I really want to get them down to Westport General Store and I think they also want to go to Hawksview Gallery and Cafe where I took my mom for Mother's Day.

Varanese in Frankfort is great. I think anyone visiting Louisville should have the J. Gumbo's experience. Also, North End Cafe. Mai's Thai in Jeffersonville, IN is probably the last decent restaurant in Hoosierville.

So far we've dined at Graham's Cafe at the Brown, Bonefish Grill, Hawksview Gallery and Cafe, Westport General Store and we had a cookout at mom's. We plan on going to Havana Rumba Saturday. They really loved Shiraz the last time they were here but only so much can be done in so little time. If they are open on the 4th, that may be a viable option being as many places will be closed. My out of town folks live in a little place in Wisconsin named Appleton and my brother says that have an absolute dearth of indies up there. He and my sis-in-law are from here and they really appreciate our indie scene.

In addition to all the other places we've been to this week, we dined at Baxter Station last night and it was wonderful. After that we went to Graeter's for the fresh peach ice cream. I believe everyone knows how fantastic that is. My entire family raved about the peach ice cream. It was a great culinary evening and my out of town folks are so green with envy. Appleton , WI just cannot measure up.
