Bauer's building knocked down?

by Leah S » Mon Jun 23, 2008 8:49 am

I haven't driven over that way in quite a while. Is the building gone? There's a letter to the Editor today that says that.
If that wonderful building is really gone, I am personally taking the pledge to never set foot in the Walgreens that's reportedly going in.

I was by there Saturday and it was still standing. However, it did look like it was being prepared to be torn down. There was an area behind and east of the building where some kind of destruction work had been done.

Trying to recall what I read a couple weeks back: The house next door was torn down to the sheer surprise of those wanting it saved since they'd expected a hearing or something first. Was built in the either the 40s, 50s or 60s, can't recall exactly, but I remember the article said not quite historic status for that particular home, apparently.

Big move, though, to save the remaining building (the restaurant), which is much older, I think. Not sure the current status of the demolition plan. Owner's moving quickly to tear it down, so unsure whether those wanting it saved will have enough time to achieve success ...

Do we really need another drug store right there? I get a bit nauseated just thinking about it.

The free St matthew section of the CJ stated a couple of weeks ago that the morning after meeting with local homeowners and stating that no demo would be done without notifying the homeowners, the house near the restaurant was torn down. Before demo could start on the restaurant, the building was given landmark status (not sure if that's the technical term). It looks like it's going to be much harder to tear down the building now.

It's near Doll's on Brownsboro Road.

In the part of town where the tornado went thru in the 70's.

Nobody in there right mind should move into that building. There are tree roots growing in the sewer pipes that clog them up. The foundation is cracked beyond repair & water leeks through the ceiling in various places.

All of which can be fixed. Not too difficult a job either.

The last historic property we bought had burst water pipes, half the roof missing, floors out of level by three inches and a sagging wall where a window had been taken out and boarded up. It's now a showplace.

Was this the Azaleas location? I'd hate to see that go.
