Best Fried Chicken & Biscuits in town?

by Tom Sizemore » Sun Jun 22, 2008 8:03 pm

Alright Louisville, who has the best fried chicken & homemade buttermilk biscuits in town? I'm from the deep south (southern Georgia) and haven't been able to find a place that does it exactly the same. Close on a few occasions, but no cigar. Any suggestions?

I don't know the answer but I'd like to know who came close. Care to disclose? I think some folks around town love the Cottage Inn's fried chicken, as do I. I also Like Indi's fried chicken.

I'm partial to Chicken King, corner of Clay & Broadway. Excellent fried chicken and sides. Forget the rolls they serve, they are junk. I don't think anyone can make biscuits better than from scratch at home; but you better stock up on White Lilly Flower. It is being closed and moved out of Tennessee.

I have to jump in on this one. For great Southern biscuits, it's only Martha White Flour.....

While they offer yeast rolls instead of biscuits (better choice IMHO), the Chicken House has always been good to us. Now I don't want to knock Huber's cause I do like their stuff, but driving past Chicken House to Starlight now seems like a less than excellent choice.

Also hear good things about Flabby's but have not tried them yet.

Of course I love local places. But honestly, I think Popeyes has the best fried chicken that I've tasted around here. I like their spice version personally. It's not too spice and always nice and crispy. I also think their side of red beans and rice is good.

My 90 year old grandmother in J-town still makes killer fried chicken and buttermilk biscuits. Fried apples and greens too. She prefers the soft White Lilly flour along with Crisco shortning....wow I need a biscuit and some apple butter now.

i heard someone mention indi's and i really like their chicken.....popeyes is ok, but i think indis is better, not greasy at all......and i prefer the spicy there as well......thier sides are ok.....personally i feel my sides can beat most of the sides at most places.....and my family agrees.....my husband is from louisville and his mother is originally from the deep south...Louisiana....so i learned most of my tips from her for my greens, mac and cheese, and others.....but i did tweak and made my own versions.......i agree that the best biscuits can only come from home......you just cannot get a great biscuit most times......not compared to one hot and fresh from your own oven....

jeez......im going to have to be frying up some chicken and making all the fixins soon.........

I like the Chicken House. I need to try the chicken at The Cottage Inn.

Had lunch today at Ann's by the River and their fried chicken isn't bad at all....could use a bit more spice I suppose.

Two of my favorites are Chicken King and Dinner is Done in J-Town. I would never have gone to Chicken King had one of my players (when I coached) convinced me to stop in and get a bunch of wings. I could eat their wings and hot sauce til I got sick..

Cottage Inn is good, and surprisingly, Tommy Lancaster's in New Albany makes good fried chicken, as well. Call me crazy, but you can't go wrong with KFC Original Recipe, either, although there is the grease factor. Nothing beats homemade. As for biscuits, I agree the White Lily recipe on the back of the bag has never done me wrong . . .I've just never been able to find anything close in a Louisville-area restaurant, aside from Cracker Barrel.

If anyone ever gets the chance to check out the Loveless Cafe in Nashville, that's about as close as I've come to homemade. Can't wait to head down to Savannah next month!

My favorite fried chicken in the area comes from Science Hill in Shelbyville. Their biscuits are good, but the cornbread fritters are outstanding.
