The Best Donuts/Pastries In The Louisville Area

by Bill Veneman » Wed Jun 18, 2008 9:26 am

I am being VERY careful in the selection of words as to not offend anyone outside of the Louisville area, however, I am looking to find the best donuts/pasteries in the area. Time was, I would go to Donut Kastle in Lyndon ( :?: side note, has anyone tried the BBQ they advertise on their sign? :?: ), and that was that, but there seems to be an exponetial explosion of places to get such goodies, and I wanted to get the "skinny" on who has the best ones.

I think there was just a topic thread on this a week or two ago. Try the search.

Oh, OK, it was actually about bakeries in general.

Nonetheless, here is the link, if I can get it to work: http://www.wineloverspage.com/forum/hotbytes/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=3454&hilit=donut

I love the donuts at Harvest Homecoming in New Albany; I look forward to them all year. They're just really simple glazed and they come to you still warm. There are actually two donut booths, the "original donut booth" is the best.

Jeff's Bakery on Court Ave in Jeffersonville has some killer Apple Fritters. They aren't anything gourmet, but just good sugar and apple fried dough. Warning: They are about the size of Frisbees and a whole one will give you an unbelievable sugar rush.

I've been going to Donut Kastle since I was little because we went to church next door. Between Sunday School and "Big Church," we'd rush over and buy a Long John and a coke with crushed ice and hope we could finish it before the service started. However, at my ripe old age of 26, I can't get up in time on the weekends to make it over there. I also enjoy Sugar & Spice out in Fern Creek. I've heard Nord's Bakery has fabulous doughnuts, but I've never had the pleasure of trying them. Actually, I think Kroger's chocolate iced doughnuts are pretty good when their fresh.

Come on, is there really such a thing as a bad donut?

You make a good point.

I forgot to mention before that Entiman's Chocolatety Doughnuts are really good too. I haven't been able to find the "chocolatety" variety in a couple of years though.

My favorite part of a doughnut is the crunchy part in the hole where the icing builds up. I'm not sure that will make sense now that I've typed it.

Jessica, I know exactly what you are talking about, that is my favorite part too!

Having grown up on Entenmann's when those donuts came out..... I was in Heaven.

As far as local, I have to say Donut Kastle too!

Hot Krispy Kremes, no matter the location. (btw, a three-day old Krispy Kreme glazed is pretty close to a bad donut)

Holland Cream at Nord's.

Nothing beats a hot/warm Krispy Kreme. Nothing.

There is a spot in the alley behind our office building where half of a chocolate Entenmanns donut has sat atop a brick wall for about 6 years now. It has not decomposed. It's still sitting there. I pass it every day. I have eaten many of those in my life, and I fear than some of them might still be lurking around somewhere in my insides.

I've got to cast my ballot for Nords...and more specifically for the Nords donut and Sunergos Cappuccino combo. Could there be a better combination of eats from two establishments that sit side by side?? Not to get off topic...but that could be an interesting thread. Can anyone else think of any? Anyway, once every week or so my girl friend and I will get a donut from Nords, for me it's either an apple fritter or a pretzel, for her it's sprinkles with chocolate icing and head next door to enjoy them with what is on most days the best cappuccino in town.
