Gyro Query

by John Hagan » Mon Jun 16, 2008 10:16 am

Hello, We are looking to find a new place to try out a good gyro. We usually go to Lonnies for one. We really like the folks at Lonnies and find the portion to be pretty good. Our only complaint is that they use the Kronos strips, we prefer the "kone". We have also tried the one over at Chicago gyro. Although the staff there was very friendly also and the gyro was cut off the kone, it still didnt satisfy our gyro fix. Our favorite gyro stop is at the Bosna Mac. Its hard to say what it is about the gyro there, maybe the awesome/pita they serve it with, but its one of the best we have had in Louisville. Any thoughts on where we might go for a new gyro fix? Thanks in advance.

And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

Though not in Louisville, if you have time for a nice drive in the country, The Trojan Horse in Bloomington, IN has my favorite gyro in the area. You can combine this with a trip to Oliver Winery or Upland Brewery for a great afternoon or weekend.

This response is NOT brought to you by the Blooimngton Chamber of Commerce. Bloomington is just a nice get away trip.
Have a Good Day!

Both the Grape Leaf and Pita Delite have good gyro. Don't know the source of the meat cutting, though.

Go to Omar's on Baxter. The food is phenomenal, and the meat is NOT pre-cut, he slices it off of the cone. Prices are very reasonable, and he has some of the best fresh hummus I've had!

Be sure to try Sharom's (maybe still called the Fishery Station) --5637 Outer Loop (near corner of Shepherdsville Rd & Outer Loop) <www.sharoms.com >

He has a gyro station, and cuts the beef/lamb from the cone. They are huge, and only $5.50 !

They are also slowly adding more middle eastern dishes: rice pilaf, hummus, baklava ...

Both use the strips.

Not sure what the name of the place in Radcliff is but I stopped in for lunch one day while driving through ad it was excellent. Right off Highway 30 in Radcliff....Oh yeah - Pita Delights is the name.

Thanks, we went over and checked them out. Yes, a fine gyro indeed. The owner stands in what looks like a cross between a phone booth and a drive-up type window where the gyro cooker is and slices off the meat to order. It was a beautiful day , so we decided to sit on the patio to enjoy our meal. We sat for a very short time before they brought out our lunch. We thought the meat was done perfect and a nice size portion as well. The pita was a good quality as well. Our only complaint was the Tazatziki sauce. Let me say first I love garlic, but this was over the top. I know the owner makes a point to work with local producers for his ingredients, so I wonder if he was using fresh, soft neck garlic for his sauce? This would explain the powerfull garlic going on. He does serve it on the side in a little cup so you can put it on as you like. My mistake was ording mine with everything, I always forget that lettuce comes on a gyro here. Up in Chicago I never ran into a gyro with lettuce, just onion, tomato, meat, and sauce. Is lettuce on a gyro common in other regions as well? So again thanks for your suggestions, we will keep looking and keep the forum updated on our search for the perfect gyro.

^ I actually think the sauce is what makes their gyro stand out.

We talked to him last time we were in, and they make it from scratch. They even make the YOGURT from scratch, and it's apparently a 3-day process just to make the yogurt base (which their mother makes) before adding the other ingredients.

Regardless, I think Sharom's is the best gyro in town...

Didnt mean to come off like I was bashing it. The sauce was obviously home made and very fresh. Just was a bit much on the garlic for us. It seemed that the garlic was (hot) like very green garlic thats not cured. Its strange I normally never have a problem with anything being to garlicy. We will go back again I am sure. Adrian, have you had one from Bosna Mak? I would check them out if you have not.

^ not a fan of that bread, and my meat has been lukewarm.

For my gyro, I prefer the standard pita!

Try Jasmin Bakery 3825 Bardstown Road on the corner of Bradford. Best in town. Get the large for around $4.00. Large as your head. They put their meat on fresh baked round loaf of bread.
You can eat in the small area or go next door to the larger dinning room. The place smells soooo good.

Hey Doug you really got our hopes up. We left the house yesterday with visions of a new and great gyro in our future. When I pulled out the map to see where Bradford was we realized thats the same place as the Bosna Mak we go to. We always go into the little grocery at the end of the building and get the gyro there, didnt know what the bakery was named untill now. LOL.. have to agree with you thats the best gyro we have had in Louisville. Thanks again

I will have to try Bosna Mak. I usually go in there to buy Ajvar and special smoked meats but I loves me some gyros. This thread has also reminded me to revisit Pita Delights. The beef and lamb combo with a greek salad and hummus is super.
