Iced Coffee from Jackson's

by SheilaB » Fri Jun 06, 2008 12:02 pm

Just want to sing the praises of the cold brewed iced coffee at Jackson's Organic. I went by this morning for a cup and it was so good I feel compelled to write - Intense delicious coffee flavor without the tiniest tinge bitterness - totally made my morning. Full disclosure I'm a friend of Chris and Sondra's - but wow it is fantastic stuff!

Ha! I just came back from there with a cold cup of their cold water toddy. It's the perfect pick me up for a HOT Friday afternoon. I highly recommend their cold water toddy. It's like iced crack in a cup!

Okay, I'll bite! To me, a toddy (or hot toddy) is a whiskey drink. Since Jackson's doesn't have a liquor license (what a concept!), what the heck is in their cold toddy?

From what Christopher tells me, it is coursely ground coffee soaked in cold water for an extended period of time.

Per Wikipedia "The Toddy process requires grinding coffee beans at a coarse setting and soaking those grounds in cold water for a prolonged period of time (usually 12 hours or more). The grounds must be filtered out of the cold water after they have been steeped; therefore, the grounds can either be put in a bag-like filter before steeping or the mixture can be fed through a filter after soaking (similar to the Toddy system). The end result produces a concentrated coffee that is often diluted with water and or dairy, and served steaming hot, over ice or blended with ice and other ingredients such as chocolate. Conventionally brewed hot coffee is highly acidic, and when poured over ice will be diluted. The resulting beverage offers bitter flavor notes.[citation needed] Cold brewed coffee is naturally sweet due to it being less acidic, and pouring cold brew over ice does not water down the beverage."

MUCH smoother than "regular" iced coffee.

Wow, that sure sounds better than what I had today - an "Americano". I didn't know what one was (and stupidly was shy about asking). Bleah. It's a shot of espresso diluted with water and poured over ice. Talk about bitter. Whew. I was just trying to get an iced coffee drink that didn't have a bunch of dairy and sugar in it, but I won't be ordering that again. Ick.

This was at Heine Brothers, and I'm not holding it against them, it was definitely my fault. I usually love anything I get there (I am not a daily coffee drinker), and on my "free" days in my diet cycle I had been ordering an iced mocha, but I was trying to save calories. Sigh.

Oops I missed this on Friday.

Thanks for the positive comments guys and Sheila thanks for being a good friend. I was very proud of your run for judge. Please keep running till you get in. You are a very special person. Louisville needs you.

Heather as always, a big supporter and one of our very first and favorite customers. Thank you.

It's true Robin, It's called a cold water toddy and has nothing to do with Whiskey, as I was brought up to believe all toddies were.

The process is so simple it can easily be done at home and can make a world of difference in your own iced coffee drinks.

It is basically a French press grind and you can just use a larger French press at home. I have a big 10 gallon toddy drip that I use.

Use 2 heaping spoons of coffee per cup. You just use cold water instead of hot. Let the press stand at room temp for a day then plunge it and let it stand for another 12 hours. After that it is ready to mix with water or milk to taste. Hot water brings out the acidity in coffee and since you don't heat the coffee at all during the brewing, it's very smooth.

It stores well and is good for a couple of weeks in the fridge. It also makes great hot drinks. You just add hot water to the concentrate.

I use a special roast that I make for my toddy but any good coffee works fine.

Robin please stop by anytime and try it out but be warned it's potent stuff. Right up your alley, I think. It's been far to long since we've seen you anyway.

I have to tell you my mum and dad are addicted to this site too now and I received a call from them in England letting me know I was being commented on.

Thanks for the site mate. It has done wonders for our business.
