New Red Robin at the mall

Looks like a new Red Robin will be opening up near the Cheesecake Factory. It is going to provide 100 new jobs and are currently hiring...... :)

Cunningham's has a good burger, and the Bristol burger is always a favorite. I really like the variation at Karem's in Norton Commons, which is like juicy bits of rare burger tossed into a tortilla wrap.

I like it that all those locally owned businesses keep all their money in town, not just the pittance that chains pay their workers.

Despite Genny's Diner's quirks, they have a fantastic burger. And count me in the "love" column for the fried pickle chips.

And I will say again: Great burger at The Delta downtown at 5th and Market for lunch.

Interesting snippet here:

In January 2006, the Company was served with a purported class action lawsuit, Matthew Huggett v. Red Robin International, Inc. This lawsuit was filed in the Superior Court of the State of California and subsequently removed to federal district court in Orange County, California. The Huggett lawsuit alleged failure to comply with California wage and hour regulations, including those governing meal and rest periods, payment of wages upon termination and provision of itemized statements to employees, as well as unlawful business practices and unfair competition. In December 2006, the Company was served with two additional purported class action lawsuits alleging violations of California’s wage and hour laws. William Harper v. Red Robin International, Inc. alleged failure by the Company to provide meal and rest breaks in compliance with California wage and hour regulations. Marie Hill vs. Red Robin International, Inc., alleged failure to pay overtime, misclassification of managers, and failure to pay for or provide meal and rest breaks.

Looks like standard mega-corporate practice to me ...

Robin -

Do you know if that was the corporation, or a franchisee? (I don't know if RR even franchises, but curious)

Andrew, I skimmed the PDF that Ron cited very quickly, mainly looking for something to needle Robert with. ;) Since this was a quarterly SEC filing by the corporation, and since the excerpt refers to "The Company," I assume it was corporate. Conversely, all the suits are in California, so it could be a franchisee. Guess I had better go back and look ...

(A few moments later)

Yes, with the caveats that it is a very lengthy document and in legalese, and I'm no lawyer, it does appear to be the corporation. Further skimming gives me no reason to doubt that the statement I excerpted - In January 2006, the Company was served with a purported class action lawsuit, alludes to a franchisee. The term "The Company" is used throughout as a reference to the corporation.

Has anyone ever ate there before? I've seen their commercials, but never a restaurant in our region.

I gave it a decent review soon after it opened:

I understand that it has become a real gathering place for large parties with lots of kids, for what it's worth.

We've been to the one out off 22 several times and the food is quite good. They have a wide selection of burgers including their signature burger which has an egg on it. All burgers come with unlimited fries measure also very good. Maybe not the best burger in town but certainly quite good and worth trying. It's also a fun place for kids.

All issues aside the food isn't bad. Not my cup of tea in terms of atmosphere, but they will do well in a mall setting I'm sure.

BTW....the burger at The Patron is tops on my list right now.

So Robin you are saying that chains pay less than working in a local place?? Do local places also offer better benefits too??? from the few people that I know that have or are working in the food bussiness they would not agree with you at all....plus the volume is also important for people working for tips....Can you give me some expamples of the wage differences between the two....I would like to see them...

I think that some of you should remember that while most of you don't like chains, etc....there are going to be 100 people working at this store, they are local, they are going to be in the Mall, which is local, they are going to be getting most of their groceries local, their alcohol local, etc.....So while the pure profit of the concept may go to California, 90% of the rest is LOCAL....that seems quite important to me.

The food is decent, but like Robin said, it's full of screaming kids, so if that's not your cup of tea, avoid it like the plague.
