55 Gallon food grade barrels

by JamesBHess » Wed Jun 04, 2008 9:23 am

Hello,
I am a long time reader but first time poster to this forum.
As the subject says I'm looking for 55 gallon plastic food grade barrels. My wife thought that maybe people in the restaurant industry might have a source for used and unwanted barrels. Thanks in advance for any tips or thoughts.

The best food grade barrels in the state are all make of oak for bourbon. You might check your nearest checmical company. There are many locally that deal with food grade stuffs. Most I am sure already have proper disposal methods.

I have a good source for plastic 55 gallon barrels that used to hold car wash soap. Not sure if they can be cleaned up enough to hold food though.

The best food grade barrels in the state are all make of oak for bourbon.

Assuming Joel is correct (and i'm sure he is) there are several places in Bardsrown that sell sweated Bourbon barrels. (they "sweat ' the barrels to remove the bourbon that's been absorbed in the wood during the aging process before sale). However, depending on what you are doing, and how long something is in the barrel, it WILL impart a special flavor into the contents tunlike storage in plastic: that's why they age Bourbon in Charred Oak barrels.

If you are interested in new oak barrels, there is a Louisville company that makes them (I know they supply Woodford). Let know and I'll look in my files for the name- but they are not cheap.

I might point out that the request was for plastic food grade barrels.

Thanks for the input. The only reason I am looking for plastic barrels is that they would be cheaper than oak barrels. Actually what I want to use them for is rain collection. Depending on the size of one's roof, a 55 gallon barrel can be filled with rain water with less than an inch of rain. There are places locally that sell barrels already modified for rain collection, but I figure that I am relatively handy and can probably make the modifications myself and save a few bucks... if I can find the barrels.
Thanks again everyone for the input.

Irrigation. We have thirsty flowers and vegetables.
It really is impressive how quickly 55 gallons will fill with rain.

Have one working at the house and it does fill up quickly. We went with the used bourbon barrel from Kentucky Barrels.com. They are close enough to go pick up thus knocking out the shipping charge.

I just received a magazine from Consolidated Plastics at work this morning. They have 55 gallon plastic drums for $94.45. It seems expensive but if you haven't found anything else, the number is 800/362-1000. PM me if you need more information.

MSD is selling rain barrels for $70 with the spiggot installed. I believe proceeds go to a Metro Parks program. Call MSD main info line. If you find a good source for the used plastic barrels keep me posted.
