Gennys Diner?

by John Hagan » Tue Jun 03, 2008 10:05 am

We stopped in yesterday, lunch time, for a burger and a brew. We sat down and opened up the menu and were asked for our drink order. We order up couple of of brews and were told they were not serving right now. I asked what time of day do they start serving. We were told they were waiting on a liquor license from either city or state, I forget. We politely told our waitress no thanks, we really wanted a beer with lunch and went elsewhere. Two questions, it seemed strange that they had all the neon beer signs going on the outside windows and they are a tavern with no license, would you keep the beer signs up if you did not sell beer? Second question, I only looked at the menu for a moment, but I swear I saw the burger listed for twelve fifty, and two fifty for cheese added, is that right? And if it is, is it really worth fifteen bucks for a burger? We will go back and check them out in the future as we have heard alot about them.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

I don't remember the exact details, but I believe that burger you questioned is around 3 pounds or so - which makes the price almost reasonable!

I have a theory that the reason that Genny's burgers are so good is that they haven't cleaned the grill since 1947, and every burger may have a tad of that original grease . . . . .

The $12 - $15 cost of the largest cheeseburger platter (with fries) at Genny's sounds about right and a person usually cannot finish it in one sitting.
Perhaps the higher price also includes a test from a cardiologist?

If you can't get to Hank's link, here's a picture (of the 3.75lb burger):

That's odd. I know I've had beer at Genny's more than a couple of times. Wonder what's going on?

Yeah, the Big Daddy is the real expensive burger... the more reasonably priced burgers (i.e., the moon burger, mmm) are $7-ish. Really tasty, too, and cooked to order. You can get a bison patty instead of beef, and they're really good, too.

Gennys has a beer and full liquor license. I suspect that it is suspended for some reason.

It is a very unique place. The owner (Frank Farris) is a unique individual. It was a customer of mine for years. Very unusual and I could tell some things, but I am afraid of getting sued.

I have eaten there quite a few times, including with my grandchildren. Food is good, service is good if casual, and prices not bad. The Sweet Daddy burger is not expensive for what you get. You would have to be an NFL sized lineman to even think of finishing one.

The menu is pretty big.

For the uninitiated, the pickles (Frickled Pickles) are pickle slices, battered and deep fried. It is a love or hate item (I hate it).
