POLL: Gas and food prices impact dining out?

by Robin Garr » Fri May 30, 2008 12:44 pm

Following up on Steve's post under the title "Business First," let's take the same poll here as Business First is taking on its Website, and see whether the results differ with an audience composed primarily of "foodies."

As the time of Steve's post, the Business First results were:

24% not changed
55% dine out less often
11% go to cheaper places
8% seldom dine out
2% other

I find myself dining closer to home more often as well.

Our family has picked other areas to cut back in other than dining out. We do stick to our favorite independents and don't explore far afield anymore. We try to combine trips which has shifted most of our dining out to lunch on weekends when running errands.

This discussion pertains to what YOU do, not your opinion about what other people do.

I was at a well-known chain restaurant this week. It was half empty. I asked the hostess if this was normal. She said this time last year they'd be on a 45 minute wait. Gas prices are making a huge impact on restaurants.

I am driving less and eating out a lot less. It's all about going to the grocery and dining at home. It isn't really a bad thing being as I am a semi-accomplished chef. I do miss the experience of dining out.
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.

In our case , the cost of gas itself has no impact on where we choose to go (We'll go to Basa as easily as we'll go the Seviche Bistro , which is only a mile away). But the overall state of the economy and rising food costs means we eat out less frequently.

I work in Clifton and I live in between Fern Creek and Buchel. We most certainly do not dine out less but we are a lot more aware of where we go. Unless it's a special occasion we stay with in the Bardstown Road area, J-town or I bring something in on my way home from work. We moved to Louisville from Texas 11 years ago and I loved roaming the city but now I hardly ever do that and if I do I have a plan. We also used to drive out of the city to explore every weekend we had off. The last time we did this was about a year ago. It's not that we cant afford it...just that picking up your keys and going seems to be a more thoughtful effort and now we opt to spend a lot of time in our yard. We also used to go to the Gorge a few times a year. Havent been in 2 or 3 years now. This could be a lifestyle change or maybe it's a economic change...not really sure.

We are combining our trips more and I have been taking my lunch to work almost every day. We have not been making special trips to eat out as much, we are deciding our errands and dining as a package more often. We are using coupons, specials and restaurant.com certificates more. We used to sometimes just get in the car and drive until we found a place that appealed to us, no more of that. :(

In my case, as a food service Pro, I really don't have the chance to eat out much anyway.

But when I have the opportunity, I really don't think about the tariff.....

Interesting .... Although 42 % of the votes say "no change" almost every comment says they have changed in some way, therefore spending less. Understanding that not every one who voted made a comment.

Robin, why the words to Robert? He stated something he has seen that pertains to this topic and all we get is a dickhead reply? You sir are a dick.
Thank you Robert for your words on this site. Weather I agree with them or not you are a welcome contributer. You always show the other side that I may not think about at the time and even if I do not agree with them it makes me think. I respect your desire to still contribute to this site with all of the things that you have gone through the past 6 months. Prost! to you and you opinions.

Prost!
