famous daves over by walmart in indiana

by S Cruz » Fri May 30, 2008 12:00 am

the fam (wife, 3 year old, and 1 year old) and i went to famous daves on a whim tonight for supper...

first, it was about 6pm, the place is packed (its indiana, less options than louisville) and my wife walks in and explains that we are under huge time constraints. the kids dont bode well with waiting, let alone if they are hungry. the hostess promptly seats us in the best available seat. not bad considering we just walked in and we have two toddler age kids (those of you with little ones understand this).
second, our server (billy was his real name) hillbilly came. he told us to call him hillbilly. it was awesome. this guy is the best thing to happen to famous dave restaurants. he completely sells the experience without seeming superficial. to break it down... he was extremely friendly and accommodating during peak hours (mind you we are an indecsisive family with toddlers, difficult at best), he was beyond knowledgeable about their menu and drink offerings (he recommended the absolute perfect offering, as to accommodate serving sizes for the kids and my wife and i), and he was absolutely the best experience that my wife and i have had with restaurant service in years. this guy was like larry the cable guy, but add a whole lot of wit. my hat goes off to famous daves for having someone so personable, astute, and professional on staff. my hat goes off to 'hillbilly' for the best dining experience ive had in years. we will go back and ask for him.
finally, the food, well...its famous daves, pretty good. not the best in the world, but pretty good. the brisket was comparable if not better than some of the highly regarded louisville bbq joints. the ribs were ok, not the best. the chicken was great. the baked beans were to die for. all in all a great experience.

now, i have to say that im a local junkie. my wife and i will go out of our way to support local business and patronize them as such. however, i would feel like i was slighting the experience if i didnt mention tonight at famous daves. i think that many of the locals would only benefit from such a great crew that we experienced from famous daves.

We have been to FD's in C-ville several times in the last couple of months and it has been very good! We also have 2 kids ages 5 & 3, so we tend to do carry out just to make life easier. We always get the feast of 2. It comes with an insane amount of food and it feeds us all with some left over. The cost is around 34.00, but on Tuesdays you get the same thing for 19.99! It's not even close to Jucy's IMO, but for a chain, it's not too bad.

Nice post, S. (Do you go by "S"?) There's never been a rule on this forum that we can't say nice things about a ch- ch- chain when it does the job well. Your post gives a beautiful illustration of that.

For what it's worth, the Famous Dave's on Hurstbourne ranks among my preferred franchise eateries as well. They seem to make an effort to do it right.

My sentiments exactly. I totally support the local indies but when a chain gets it right why not give them the biz as well. I dine at the same location with coworkers and we always have a great experience. Lunchtime there is a madhouse but the staff seems to actually revel in the experience.
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.

We have had large family gatherings and has used Famous Daves for large quantity take out. With about an hours notice they really supplied alot of good quality food for a reasonable price. We've had take-out from both Clarksville and Hurstbourne....both were fine. My guess is that a local BBQ place would have needed at least 24 hours notice.

There used to be a place on Hurstbourne Lane that had good ribs but it folded...Red, Hot, & Blue I think.

You are right Mark...Red Hot and Blue was a great BBQ place....They had some of the best potatoe salad around and there pulled pork and ribs were great....Wei always got the slab for two...a full slab and two sides each along with a mini loaf of bread for $16.50. A price that no one could touch at the time...
