Great NYT multimedia feature on Bitters.
Check it out: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2008 ... ATURE.html

We serve the LeftHand sawtooth ale they speak of in the feature.

I just had a Browning's ESB at CarlyRae's the other night. It was fantastic. I love bitters. Served on cask, they are one of my favorite styles.

Fuller's ESB is a great winter, spring and fall beer too.

Its on my desert isle - only 6 beers for the rest of my life - list.

Fuller's ESB
Sam Smith Nut Brown
Bell's Two Hearted
Chimay Grande Reserve
Weinhenstephaner Dunkel
Hackr-Pschorr Oktoberfest

yeah, that would do. I would be missing a lot, but I could survive. Um, could someone sneak some Cantillon Gueuze to my island please?

I love it....beers for the rest of my life list....like trying to pick the best beatles or stones song. You've got me thinking...

As far as bitters go, I like Fuller's the best, not enough bottled versions going around these days...used to be a great ESB from a now defunct brewery called Oasis in BoulderCO.

Although most pale ales from England could be designated as a "bitter" or maybe a "special bitter". Fuller's London Pride Pale, Bass, etc.

They're used to be a decent one from Mordue Brewery in England but haven't seen it in awhile. They're used to be a Gale's Mild I haven't seen in years and 3 Floyds used to make a mild but since they moved out of KY...I'm not sure if it's out there or not...

If you see a Bluebird Bitter from England, give it a shot. Nice beer, I believe its a bottle-conditioned, well-balanced unlike the US versions which lean more towards hops, like most US ales.

Of the US versions, I like Left Hand Sawtooth an awful lot when it's fresh, good beers, good people. Anderson Valley is another US version worth drinking. I had a Breckenridge Extra ESB a few weeks ago and it was a little more than I was after...that day at least. Schlafly makes a Winter ESB that's pretty good too.
