Chicago dining tips...

by Sarita C » Sat May 24, 2008 11:16 pm

My mother is treating us to a weekend in Chicago to celebrate my daughter's graduating high school. We are staying at The Palmer House.
Any nearby suggestions? Tomorrow in the the light of day maybe we will be able to see more.

Best,
Sarita

Millers Pub/Bar/Grill is just around the corner and was pretty darn good the couple of times I've been there. An easy quick walk and loads of great old photos on the walls.

There are a couple of big threads on eating in Chicago. I think Ethan started one.

I think Palmer House is in the Loop. Avec is very close. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Foodlife is fun and its in water tower place.. If you are in the Palmer house, you need to have the bookbinders soup. Walk down Michigan Ave. and go by the Trib Tower, it has chunks of famous buildings stuck into it that reporters sent back from all over the globe. If you remember the Sat. Nite Live episode with Ackroyd and Belushi doing the Cheesburger Cheeseburger Pepsi Cokie, thats named after the Billy Goat Tavern on Lower Michigan ave. at the river. Ask anybody and they can point it out to you.

The Palmer House is in the heart of the Loop, and is currently undergoing a $150 million renovation. Thus a lot of the restaurants have turned over there.

For lunch, you might try Atwood Cafe, which is in the Hotel Burnham, only a block or two away at State and Washington across the corner from Marshall Fields. The Hotel Burnham is in the Reliance Building, a very early, historic Chicago skycraper with a wonderful terra cotta facade. The construction on Block 37 might block the view now, but the building housing Borders Books at State and Randolph was built to echo this.
