Anybody want a LOT of rosemary?

by Robin Garr » Thu May 22, 2008 2:15 pm

We have a rosemary bush in our yard that we've carefully nurtured through 10 Kentucky winters until it's about the size of a VW Beetle. Mary is pruning it today, and we expect to have a garbage-bag full of clippings

There's way too much here for private use, but if any restaurant chefs could use a bag full we'll gladly donate it to your cause. It's an Italian cultivar, grown organically, and pretty intense stuff.

Post a reply or respond by Email to rgarr@louisvillehotbytes.com if interested ... first come, first served.

I thought I had a lot of rosemary this year. "Size of a VW", huh? Hope somebody takes you up on your offer. I'm all set here. I do, however, have LOTS of oregano this year and I'm engaged in a neverending battle to keep the mint at bay. If any of you folks need some fresh oregano or spearmint and you're in the Jeffersonville area, just let me know.

We DID have a huge rosemary bush, but for some reason it didn't survive a couple of winters back. I replanted last year and it survived this winter nicely (but definitely not the size of a VW). However, my thyme is going nuts. It's planted above a retaining wall and is hanging over by about 12 inches. .........so if anyone needs thyme, let me know. And if this year is anything like years past, we'll also have a lot more basil than I could ever use.

Don't get me started on the mint........I pull it out every year....and every year, it comes back and strangles everything in its path. Mint=cudju (sp?)

Mint's bad (invasive), but till you've lived in Georgia and watched Kudzu literally grow TWELVE INCHES a day, swallowing up buildings, trees, stalled cars and slow-moving children, you ain't see nuttin' yet! Oh, and it thrives best on concrete and used motor oil!

I have Kudzu growing straight up my own side yard and it is wild! When I mowed the lawn yesterday, I ran right over those tangly vines (in a very vain effort and for fun). Weird for the city landscape. The only reason we aren't smothered by it is because our temperatures drop JUST enough through winter. Years ahead, local landscapes will change...

And to think we have the United States Army Corps of Engineers to thank for it! For those of you who haven't had the privilege to see Kudzu you are really missing something. Not only does it grow very fast but it's darn near impossible to kill, it just laughs at Roundup and most other herbicides. If you cut it up or plow is under the pieces all start new plants. Originally it was planted to prevent erosion but actually the ground just erodes underneath it so you can see the ravines and you fall in them.

Actually there are a couple of towns in South Carolina that have annual Kudzu festivals that include cooking competitions where Kudzu has to be the primary item in all dishes. I'll bet some of our local chefs would have fun with that competition!

You will never kill by pulling. Use Roundup while it is growing actively. If you want some plant it in a container. You will get enough that way, but it may not overwinter. Don't sit the container on the ground where the roots can come through.
