sushi

by Jackie R. » Wed May 14, 2008 10:22 pm

Okay, I ventured out on my own tonight. I'll begin by stating that I'm a bit of a sushi adolescent. I've never really judged the quality / selection / cost / etc... of the many venues I've patronized, at the expense of my expert company. I love Maido and the others have been satisfying. But I needed to experience without third party where my my sushi soul begins and extends. I won't mention the place (inconsequencial), but upon first smell, it was gross. I've smelled this smell before and buried the memory as a bad state of mind. But I don't think that's it. I think there's some frequency about it. Not all Japanese restaurants have this, I know, but I think many of them do. Hibachi flames emit funky aromatic oils, fish sauce, the thick fryers kicking out the tempuras that pervade our ever loving (I once loved 'em too, but no more) cooked rolls. The place was busy but not over seated, the staff acted as though it was, and the environment was covered in grease. The main reason for my post is to discover which of you have been whopped in the olfactory with that gross smell?! And fyi, I am touted for having an "iron stomach", but all great things in life are due change.

That's why we frequent Tokyo on Lime Kiln Lane. No hibachi grill....just great fresh sushi. It's a small family operation.

Listen to Jeremy! Oishii is super! Excellent sushi, and the chefs are fluent in English and very friendly.

A second for Tokyo!

by Doug W » Thu May 15, 2008 9:31 am

I've been hitting Tokyo for lunch about once a week for awhile now. VERY good sushi. As mentioned above, there are now hibachi grills, so it is quieter and no associated smell.

They are top tier as far as sushi goes. They are also very friendly and will work with you if you want to let them surprise you!

On another note, perhaps related to the Maido thread - they were out of regular tuna earlier this week. They only had white tune but it was very good as well.

Cheers,

Doug

My friend Jennifer "LOVES" sushi and her favorite place is Sapporo. Personally, I like Raw.

I just discovered Hiko-a-mon at Westport Village and I must say it's the BEST sushi I've had in the Ville. It is a really small but has alot of character. It was full of japanese buisness men, so I thought that was a good sign. I was right! I'ts not close to you Jackie, but worth the drive. Give me a call and I'll take you. Since the wife is expecting our 2nd child ( a boy again) So, now we have Ethan Diego and comming soon Ian Cruz. She can't eat sushi, so I have to find friends to eat sushi. Anyways, I put Hiko-a-mon at the top of my list IMO

Yeah! I think I told you about that place, Lamas! And as to Sir Ian Cruz (very cool name, man) good lord, look out... another boy wonder. I can't wait to see Ethan become the big brother. Definately have to go for some sushi soon. Also give me shout soon when you have some time to knock back a couple on the city's finest patio locale.

Oishii Sushi is the mack!
The owners/chefs are super polite, super generous, and I share Robin's desire to drink the ginger-miso dressing ("It tasted so good that I wanted to pick it up and drink it, but my wife kicked me under the table when she saw what I had in mind").
I've been 5x it's so good.
